Jeff suffered from undiagnosed psychopathy. When he was very little, he used to exhibit signs of this, but as he grew older he realized that the strange looks and nasty rumors he got were because of this. As such, he began to fake emotions. His family died believing he just 'snapped' randomly, not because there had been an underlying problem the entire time.
