The next morning I awoke with a strange amount of energy, I put on my Nike's and headed out the door for a run. Not only was I going for a run, I was going on an investigation. I wanted to see the neighborhood and what kind of people lived here. I was only about four houses down when I noticed a black SUV following slowly behind me. I pulled out my phone and shot a quick text to Mel, "Going for a run, I'll be fine" and almost immediately got one back, "That's fine. I'll be close." Mel was the head officer in charge of watching over me, he was a sweet older man but lord did he take his job seriously. I couldn't do anything without him creeping about, which I suppose from a protection stand point is good but from a teenage girl stand point, drives you insane. From the looks of the neighborhood, it appeared to be quiet and peaceful, mostly elderly folks were out watering plants and staring at the sunrise. Maybe I was too early to see the exciting part of the neighborhood. I ran down in a dead end quickly turning around and heading back home. I ran all the way through the doorway and upstairs to the shower. I let the cold water pound down on my hot skin, closing my eyes and letting the water run over my face. I could get used to this town, I thought to myself.
I got dressed and headed downstairs only to find Mel waiting in my kitchen. "Melman?" I yelled. "What has brought you to my home?"
He glared at me, "Next time I want to know where you're going ahead of time, I almost lost track of you for a moment!"
"Sorry, geez. I never had to do that before!" I said thinking back on past locations, but then again I never went many places to begin with.
"This city is large and dangerous. I need to know your location at all times!" I picked up my phone as he spoke sending a quick text "I'm in the kitchen" Mel picked up his phone and read the message, obviously not finding as much humor as I did in the joke. "I'm serious Olivia! This isn't time for fun and games!"
"Fine! Sorry! Excuse me for trying to lighten up the mood!" I said taking a seat at the kitchen counter.
"Just please be careful, okay?"
"Okay." I said offering a slight smile. I had no idea why Mel was being such a hardass this morning but I knew it was only because he truly does care about me.
"You know where to find me." Mel headed out the door. I jumped up and watched from the window as he made his way to the house across the street, headquarters. I felt my phone vibrate in my pocket, a text from Mel, "Quit stalking me!" I laughed, waving in the window before heading back into the kitchen for some breakfast.
