It was a normal day for the teens at Hawkins High School in the late winter. Although for one particular freshman girl, being stuck inside a building for eight hours, getting crammed with a bunch of information and hating it was what she wishes she could focus on. Ellie's attention and worries were all on what was going to happen right after school. She honestly wishes this school day would never end but it was already seventh period and just five minutes before eighth. It seemed like the day flew by. Ellie sat in her desk, fiddling with her pencil, staring at nothing in particular as she dreaded going to the doctor's today. 

One particular freshman boy noticed Ellie's strange behavior and raised an eyebrow, wondering what was bothering her. "Psst.. Ellie."

She snapped out of her trance and looked at Dustin. "What," she mouthed.

"What's wrong?" Dustin mouthed back. Ellie's lips pressed together slightly and her eyebrows furrowed a bit. She opened her mouth and was about to whisper something to him but the teacher called on her and her head instantly faced forward.

"What's the answer to number four?" Mr. Carter, the geometry teacher asked. Ellie glanced down at her notes... they were completely blank. Thankfully Dustin quickly mumbled the answer.

"Uh- 17.4 centimeters," she said trying to sound just a little confident.

"Yep, nice job..." Mr. Carter continued on with his spiel while Ellie glanced at Dustin and whispered a thanks. He smirked and nodded once in response. Ellie's gaze lasted on Dustin and for a moment her doctor's appointment had left her mind... and then the bell rang. Everyone gathered their things and filed out of the classroom to face one more class before the weekend.

Dustin walked up to Ellie in the hallway, "so what's going on?"

Her shoulders slouched forward a little and her face fell. "I have a doctor's appointment right after school today." 

Dustin just looked at her for a moment before speaking. "Do you.. not care for the doctor's or something?"

"The doctor is fine but... I don't know if you've noticed but I've been sick for a while and I've missed some school because of it," Ellie answered.

"I've noticed," Dustin let slip out. Ellie glanced at him.

"Oh.. you have?"

"Y-yeah." Dustin thought about how she had recently been looking kind of pale in the face and had seemed tired a lot. She wasn't being her usual talkative self lately. He didn't ask her what was wrong because he every time he thought about asking, he'd get nervous. But now he has his answer.

"Oh.." Ellie cleared her throat before talking again. "Well, the doctor said I could have mono and wants me to get my blood tested." She felt herself shrinking as she explained her situation.

"Ohhh.. needles? Or blood.. or both?"

"I'm fine with blood but... needles. I'm terrified of them. And the last time I had to get blood work done my mom just stayed in the waiting room. I was so nervous, I seriously HATE needles." Ellie had a look of fear on her face.

"Aww.. I'm sorry," Dustin started while looking at her with a slight frown. "Um.. If I'm allowed, do you want me to go with you so you have someone back there next to you?" He instantly regretted asking that as soon as it came out of his mouth and he cursed himself for it. Sure it would be something nice to do for a friend but he thought he seemed way too forward with it. His question surprised Ellie but her answer surprised him even more.
