Why I became Nightwing
As you may know I’m Dick Grayson. Most people know me as Batman’s sidekick Robin though. It’s not that I didn’t like fighting crime with a partner, but Bruce was treating me like a child, a sidekick. While people praised him from stopping the maniacs that plagued Gotham, I was invisible, or if people did notice me, they just pretended I didn’t do anything to help. But instead of becoming corrupted by jealousy like most people I just decided to leave and become my own hero.
“Robin come on it’s time to go.” Batman shouted from the batmobile.
“Coming.”
I sighed and got on my motorcycle, he drove away and I followed behind as we went to stop the Joker once again. Once we got to the warehouse I jumped off my bike and ran at him.
“Robin wait!”
“No, I can take him!” I shouted.
“It could be a trap!”
I ignored him and jumped over the ‘trap’ Joker had set, wouldn’t catch me that easily. Sometimes I thought Bruce treated me like I was a retard, but I couldn’t think like that now I had a villain to catch, and if there was one thing I hated it was to let a villain get away unpunished. Batman joined me and together we started to beat Joker and his thugs. Once we tied them up and hauled them off to Arkham we went back to the batcave.
“What were you thinking, just charging in there like that?” He ranted.
“I knew what I was doing, I saw the thugs and the trap.”
“What would’ve happened if I hadn’t been there to help you?”
“Stop treating me like a child! I could’ve handled all of them even without you.”
“I just don’t want to see you getting killed.”
“I’m fine, so stop worrying.”
The tension in the room had died down but I kept glaring at him until I made my decision to leave. I went to my room and packed my things, I already rented an apartment in a nearby city, then got on my motorcycle and drove away. The next day Bruce called me and demanded to know where I was. I told him and he commanded me to come home, I told him I wasn’t his child and I could take care of myself, after saying that I hung up and ignored the rest of his calls. Later that day I became a police officer and chose the new name for myself, Nightwing, I made a new outfit that was black and blue and fought crime by night. Bruce came to look for me but I stayed out of sight until he left, eventually I knew I’d have to tell him who I was. The people of this town knew someone was helping to keep the crime off their streets but didn’t know who it was. I remember the last thing I said to Batman all those years ago.
“Who are you?”
“You know who I am you just don’t realize it, or maybe you just don’t want to admit it.” I told him when we finally met in my new city. “Does the name Robin mean anything to you… Bruce.”
I walked away after saying that and I haven’t seen him since, nor do I want to. Although I will help him out anonymously by giving away villain’s locations.
