"Light!"
Misa. Fucking hell.
"Light, how are you?" Miss asks as she happily skips over to me as sits in my lap.
Out of the corner of my eye, I see L hesitate to take a bite out of the cake in front of him. He's not happy that Misa is here, and he's not happy that I still haven't broken things off with her.
It's been a few weeks since the incident with the razor blade, which means I still haven't manned up enough to tell her.
It's bad enough that the wedding is three months from today, but the fact that today marks my one-year relationship with L makes it all so much worse.
I wanted today to be special, but I might as well hang myself instead.
Goddammit, Misa.
"Huh?" I hear, and I look up to see Misa's big eyes staring right through me.
"What?" I ask her.
"What you said, Light," she says, "What did you mean?"
Shit. I said that last part out loud.
Its time to man up.
"I'm absolutely, completely, thoroughly finished with our engagement, Misa," I tell her, and everyone's heads whip around faster than I ever thought possible. "I'm moving out - today."
Light flashes through L's eyes and I can't help but breathe a sigh of relief.
"But, Light, the wedding!" Misa cries as I push her off of me and stand up. "The wedding is in three months! I've already bought my dress and -"
"Enough, Misa," I snap as the chains are finally lifted from my shoulders. "L, come with me to help me get my things from her apartment. Matsuda, take care of Misa."
L sends me a look before asking, "What? Now?"
I grab his hand and pull him with me towards the exit, saying, "Yes, now."
In the middle of Misa's wailing, I manage to drag L out of headquarters to my car. He protests along the way, but I just shake my head and laugh at him.
Once we're in my car and on the highway, I look over at Ryuzaki and take his hand, saying, "I'm finally, completely yours."
This earns me a small smile.
Hell yeah.
"Light-kun," He murmurs, smiling to himself. "Thank you."
His smile is absolutely beautiful.
I squeeze his fingers, saying softly, "I love you, Ryu."
He nods and says, "I love you too, Light."
We're quiet for the remainder of the trip to the house Misa had trapped me in. When we arrive, L claims he'd rather stay in the car, but I insist on him coming with me. It would be easier to do this with him here, without Misa around, so I can have a clean break from her.
"Light-kun," L says as we walk into the small house, "Why today?"
I smile.
Oh, L.
You can be so adorable sometimes.
I take his hand and lace our fingers together, saying, "Today is our one-year anniversary, Ryu. I wanted it to be special, and I know I've done a shit job of it so far, but I promise I'm going to make today unforgettable."
"How?" He asks as I lead him to the bedroom.
I sit on the edge of the perfectly made bed and take both of his hands in mine. The sunlight filtering in through the window behind the bed sets L's face aglow with light. His onyx eyes sparkle behind his disheveled raven-black hair, and his cute little smile is even more beautiful than it has ever been before.
I reach a hand toward his face and pull his lips down to mine as I whisper, "This is how I plan to start, Ryu."
He hesitantly melts into the kiss, but he relaxes when I pull him into my arms and we tumble backwards onto the bed.
"I thought Light-kun had to get his things?" L asks once the kiss ends.
I kiss his forehead, saying, "I do, but I wanted to kiss you before we got to work."
"I see," he says as we pull ourselves back to our feet and readjust.
I kiss his cheek, "I love you, silly detective."
He blushes as I walk past him to get into my closet. He sits perched on the chair by the lamp as I empty my closet and pack my suitcases. I go through each room of the house, making sure to leave nothing behind. If I get a clean break, then the least I can do for Misa is give her a clean break too.
After an hour, once everything is in the car, I drive L and I back to headquarters. When we arrive, L asks Watari to take care of my belongings.
Then, we get back to work.
"Matsuda, update!" L shouts as we take our place at our computers.
Matsuda runs toward L with a folder in hand, saying, "There have been ten more deaths so far today, Ryuzaki. The reports are in here."
"Thank you," L replies, "Now, get back to work! I'll even let everyone leave early tonight as long as we make progress on this case."
I glance over at L just as he winks at me. I simply shake my head and smile to myself, wondering what he could possibly be up to.
Surprise me, love.
