I look at my parents in disbelief. "What do you mean you don't know where she is?"
"She's a full grown woman Rafe, she has a right to come and go as she pleases. Although leaving like she has right now isn't the best thing she could have done. She said that you wouldn't even look at her. You ignored her and put your entire, complete, and full attention on your daughter. You didn't even notice when she left the room.
"I'm the first person to understand the incredible miracle a new born baby is, but getting so lost in her to the exclusion of all else, including your wife, is wrong Rafe. Maha said that you got what you wanted and so she left. She didn't say where and she isn't going to try to take the Princess.
"She said that we all got what we wanted from her and she is no longer needed. She called off the wedding." I say, my tones are even and not condemning in any way. I'm not too sure that Maha isn't right in her assessment. I thought my son was taken with Maha before, but it's nothing to how he's acting about their daughter.
"She said that all you want is your daughter. All the people want is you and safety. She's done her best to give them the safety, now she's giving you, your daughter and our people you."
I don't understand, what happened? Maha left me and I still don't understand why. She's even leaving our daughter behind.
I turn to my mother, "I don't understand. What did I do?"
My mother looks at me like she's never seen me before. "You looked at her a grand total of once after she woke up. I doubt you looked at her before that at all. You were beyond possessive of your daughter. You only went over to Maha because I had given her the chance to hold her and you couldn't stand the idea of being away from your daughter that long. Even then you didn't look at Maha. She asked you a question and you ignored her. She said that she hit you and you ignored her. She took her pillow and hit you, carefully so that it wouldn't hurt the baby and you looked at her then ignored her.
"She got up, took a shower and packed and left and you didn't even notice for over two hours. She packs up from here and leaves and now hours later you want to know where she is. Why? So you can ignore her again? Hasn't she already had enough of that? She says that since you don't want her that she's giving you your freedom.
"Really Rafe, how could you?" The darkness is closing in around me as my chest tightens. I can't breath. I hurt her again and this time I don't think she will forgive me. I hadn't even realized that I had gotten so lost and caught up with my daughter.
I am thankful that the Commander had come back. She understood at least, I think she does. She had seen how captivated Rafe was with his daughter and how he didn't even look at me. I knew things were going to change when she was born, but I didn't think that he would ignore me completely.
I wipe the tears of self pity from my eyes once more. I sniff, I should have known better. Since when did anyone truly care about me? Rafe certainly had me fooled though. Well he got his daughter, I wonder if he's even noticed that I'm not there yet? Probably not and if he did he wouldn't care.
The car pulls into a cabin that is isolated. A real cabin, one like I've always imagined. The king set this up for me. He said it was the least he could do after every thing they've done. But he isn't happy about me leaving. But how could I stay? I'm not the one Rafe wants, it's his daughter. Yes, his daughter, because he is far too possessive to share her with me. That's why I left her.
The driver will be my body guard as well. The king says that there is little chance of me being found here, but he's not going to take chances with anything. He's terrified that the Other's will come any day now and that I won't be protected.
