There have been suggestions that I should end the story on the previous chapter, so I will. This chapter was the epilogue, but people were unhappy how the story ended. So you are welcome to read and of course vote, but remember you have been warned.
Three years have flown by since the attack by the Others on my coronation day. Three years since Maha and I have been chained to the throne, I find that her words were more than a little apt. Three years since I lost my mother.
We lost many good people during that war, or battle really. Afterwards we couldn't let things rest. One of the things Maha had downloaded when she stole the information from the Other's was the coordinates to the Other's home world and their colonies.
We took the fight to them. But it wasn't really much of a fight. There weren't many ships left. Apparently they sent the majority against us. And what was left, the crew were too sick to fight.
Their worlds were no better. Thousands were reporting sick and millions had already died. The virus had flourished in their systems. It had mutated and changed to the point that we couldn't take the chance of catching the virus or it might kill us as well. Something like the virus that killed over a million people on Earth in 1918.
We left ships there to keep an eye on them but the virus soon became too virulent for any of their people. Several billion people died because their Emperor decided that he should have the only space faring race in the universe.
Maha is even more beautiful then ever. She's given me a son and I learned my lesson from the first time. I didn't let myself get so fascinated with him that I forgot about Maha.
We aren't perfect but we are for the most part happy.
I look at the test in my hand incredulously. How can this be happening again? I thought their doctors said that it wouldn't happen again?
"Maha are you okay?" Rafe says as he knocks on the door. I had locked my self in here to have some privacy.
I unlock the door and Rafe takes one look at me, "Maha, what's wrong?"
I can't answer him. My eyes fill with tears and all I can do is hand him the test.
"What's this?" Rafe asks until he takes a closer look and his eyes get wider and a bit frightened.
"Is this what I think it is?" Rafe demands and I nod miserably.
"How?"
"Well, you stick your-" Rafe cuts off my speech by kissing me. He's learned that that is the least offensive way to do it.
"No, you know what I mean Maha. I thought they said that you couldn't get pregnant again."
"That's what they told me too. So does that mean we can fire the lot of them?" I was told after I had our son that I couldn't have any more kids. That something had gone wrong and made it so that it wouldn't happen. Of course it didn't stop the blasted monthly issue. But this month had been late and I'd been feeling sick, hence the test taking.
Rafe calls and makes an appointment for me that day and cancels all our appointments other than that one.
"Well your majesties, you are not only pregnant but it looks like you might be having twins." The doctor comes in after giving me an exam. I give her a dirty look.
"You, yourself said that Maha wouldn't be able to have any more children," Rafe is angry, because of what else the doctor said.
"No, I said that she shouldn't have any more children. It would likely kill her if she does."
I have to hold Rafe back. It wouldn't do for the King to be charged for murder.
"No, doctor, you said and I quote, 'you can't have anymore children which is a good thing since if you did it would likely kill you.' Unquote." The doctor turns white and I think that she's about to faint. At this point I don't care.
"It is early days yet, we can arrange to have the abortions next week if that will suit you, Majesty?" The doctor says white faced and no little scared.
"The hell we're going to have an abortion." I am adamant about that. I'm not going to kill my babies.
Rafe doesn't argue. He's not happy about this. If I die then he'll die as well. Some how this bond still hasn't been made general knowledge.
The doctor isn't happy about this. She looks up some information for us and writes it down. "This is a specialist in high risk pregnancies. If anyone can help you through this and keep you all alive it will be this doctor."
"Maha, are you sure this is the route you wish to go?" Rafe asks once we get home.
"I'm not going to kill my babies Rafe. Call the specialist and set up an appointment." I demand and he doesn't say anything. He just makes the call.
From that day forth Rafe becomes more than a little attentive and he takes as much time with the kids as he can. The council works on making the ten worlds an alliance rather than the empire that it truly is. This allows Rafe more time to be with us.
The specialist has actually moved into the palace so that he can be near me if it is needed.
It's amazing how fast the time goes by.
I can't believe it's been four years since I last saw Earth and first met Rafe.
Four years since I was abused and mistreated.
Now I'm a loved wife and mother. Not to mention the freaking queen. That part I could actually do without.
I've grown very close to Esperanza. She's a sweet and loving girl. I gave her a lot of hurt when she was so very young. She's forgiven me completely, I don't know where she gets it from. Rafe says that it's from me, but I've never been that forgiving.
Our son we named Cleon. And he's a right little devil, reminds me a great deal of his father.
I wish we knew what we were having this time. We are definitely having twins. But we don't know if they are boys, girls or one of each.
As I sit in the garden watching as the children play I feel a twinge. I ignore it at first, I'm only seven and a half months along.
The twinge's don't go away and after an hour they start coming closer together.
I call Rafe and he's in the garden in no time. He has his father with him who takes the children and feeds them.
Rafe takes me to the specialist.
"Well your majesties it seems that these two are ready to come out now. You're already nicely dilated Queen Maha. We should go to the hospital now. I don't like how fast the contractions are starting to come."
Looking at the doctor I don't like how he looks either.
"What is it doctor?"
"It's early even for twins, but I think they should pull through, but I've noticed some bleeding my Queen. The sooner we get you to the hospital the better all way round."
Rafe turns white. We were told that it might cost me my life, but we'd managed to avoid thinking about that.
Maha has gone into emergency surgery. She wasn't progressing and the babies became distressed. I'm distressed, I don't know what I'll do if I lose Maha.
I hear the sound of a baby crying and then a short time later another baby starts crying.
I really wanted to be in there with her but the doctor wouldn't let me. I'm going crazy not knowing what's going on.
Suddenly several people rush towards the room where they performed the surgery on Maha.
After what seems like forever the doctor comes out. My sister takes my hand, he doesn't look like he has good news.
After he says his first words my world goes black and I know no more.
