(This story is set in 2016, btw!")
"So you have no wifi here?" Jamie asked, shocked.
"Nope," Leo smiled at how enthusiastic Jamie was about Leo being completely disconnected from the internet. "I've never been into the aspect of the Reli-web."
"Well, maybe that's the reason you live alone." Jamie accused.
"Jamie!" Liz screamed in disapproval.
"It's okay Amelia." Leo flashed her a smile then turned back to Jamie. "I live out here alone in case anyone decides to be stupid enough to wander into nowhere with no supplies at hand and needs help. Or, you know,.....they lose their map. But who would be stupid enough to do that?"
Leo walked past Jamie grinning from ear to ear.
Jamie's face grew red while Trevor couldn't stop laughing. Amelia looked past Jamie, at the boy. He walked without flaw. Well, except for his rigid posture. He seemed up tight. But he kept walking, not mentioning where they were going or what they were doing, seeming destined to aimlessly wander the halls of his mansion house forever.
"I'm tired!" Jamie complained.
"Last door."
"Really?"
"No," Leo teased.
Amelia had counted about five to ten halls they'd passed through before she decided that it seemed pointless to stay silent.
"You have a lot of rooms here." Liz commented.
"Yeah." Leo agreed. "A lot of people have come and gone. I allowed them to make their own rooms attaching to the house as long as the breach in the house wasn't open for too long."
"What would happen then?" Trevor questioned.
"Oh.....um you don't want to know. It's happened twice before. That's why I suggest you find other people's rooms to sleep in tonight. In fact, I'll help you find them."
No one spoke for a long time as they realized what had happened to the people who made their own beds and didn't complain that they'd be sleeping in other people's beds.
"We're almost there, but I have to warn you about something." Leo stated. "It may shock you a bit."
"From the night we had, I don't think we will be." Trevor explained.
"Well then you won't be shocked to hear that there are things that lurk in this house that are not human." Leo said as he kept walking through the wooden-floored corridors to the final door where he stopped.
"Wait, what?" Jamie asked, starting to get nauseous.
"Yes." Leo confirmed. "There are spirits that walk the halls at night. They don't interact with you. You may think they are looking at you. Don't worry as long as you don't make a sound they won't notice you're there."
"And if we do?" Trevor asked nervously.
"Then they'll probably turn sharply scaring the crap out of you." Leo explained. "But these days you never know. Just make sure to lock your doors at night."
"So real life ghosts will be walking through the halls at night right outside our doors?" Jamie asked nervously, starting to shake.
"Well not, exactly. They aren't exactly real ghosts. Just memories of people who have either been forgotten or have too many regrets to have lived happily wherever they end up. If you come close enough to hear one, you could probably find them muttering something about their old life." Leo explained.
