Joe walked out with me close by his side, our prepared book in his hand tightly to not show the crickets. He hid his face as best he could and stood in line. Luckily Caspar was almost finished with the signing and Joe was able to get behind the last few people. Caspar saw me and recognized me and said hello.
"Hey!" I said cheerfully, we have our last person here. Joe's camera was still set up in a nearby concealed shelf.
"Hello Caspar I'm a big fan." Joe said in a falsetto. Caspar just smiled and held his hand out for the book.
I exchanged looks with Joe, were we going to get away with this?
Caspar put the book on the table in front of him and reached for a sharpie and quick thinking I whipped out my camera and started recording. As he opened the book his eyes got wide and he slid the book off of the table on to the ground with a scared yell. Joe and I met each other eyes trying to hold in our laughter to the point where it hurt and then lost our shit laughing.
"What the fuck!" Caspar yelled and pushed the table away disgustedly.
"Mate." Joe choked out with difficulty because of how hard he was laughing. "Mate it's me."
"Are you fucking serious buddy?" Caspar said loudly and collapsed on his chair and put his head in his hands. "Rory was in on it too?!" Caspar exclaimed.
Joe took a deep breath and wiped the tears from his eyes. "Guys you saw it here, Caspar Lee losing his shit." He looked around and turned the lens towards me. "Thanks to Rory here I pulled it off."
Caspar got up to hug Joe, who pulled me in for the hug too. I laughed, my voice muffled against Joe's shirt. "I wish you would stop with these fucking pranks man." Caspar said frustrated. That made Joe and I laugh again.
Joe and Caspar packed up their stuff, and Joe changed back into his shirt.
"Glad that wig is off now." He said while carefully removing the lens from his camera and putting it in his camera bag.
"Trust me I know." I said leaning against the shelf. "I have to wear that to read stories to kids."
"Wow that sounds rough." Joe said sympathetically.
"Nah I love my job, that's the one bad thing about it." Joe looked up at me and smiled.
"Hey what's your job?... besides you know this" I said and gestured to his camera.
"As of now it is my full time job." Joe said and his eyes scanned my face as if he was afraid of my reaction. "But I used to be a roof thatcher."
"That's cool that you do this for a living." I said as Joe bent down to pick up his bag. "But it seems like a lot of pressure."
Joe looked relieved. "It totally is. Obviously I love my job, but it's hard when everything I do is in the public eye. Relationships, where I live, who I hang out with."
I nodded. Joe quickly said to me "I'm not in a relationship now, but I have been while I've been doing this whole youtube thing."
I smiled at Joe. I felt a little hopeful and then kicked myself. Don't set yourself up for failure. "What an exciting life you lead Mr.Sugg." I commented casually.
He laughed and then added "It's nice to just hang out, and not have people treat me like I'm some celebrity, or anything different to who I am." He looked me in the eyes. " I'm just a normal guy who got lucky, and put some work in. I was in the right place at the right time."
I looked thoughtfully at him. "Don't give yourself so little credit. I'm sure you've worked your ass off."
Joe smiled softly at me. I returned that same smile and got lost in his eyes again. Before I made a fool out of myself Caspar came walking through the shelves.
"You all set buddy?" He asked Joe.
"Yeah cheers mate." Joe said and looked at me.
"Well I guess this is it for now." I said.
"Rory could I get your number?" Joe asked. He blinked and then quickly added "So I can show you your part in the video and make sure you're okay with it."
"Okay." I said softly, and typed my number into his phone.
"I'll text you." He said and held up his phone.
"You do that." I said and smiled at him.
Joe cleared his throat, and started to say something but stopped. "Um see you around Rory." He said awkwardly and walked out of the bookstore.
