"Your mother and I have been absolutely frantic, Alexander!"
Alex knew this was coming. There had never been a possible eventuality that was not this one; this one being the fact his parents were stood with their hands on their hips in the cavernous hallway, eyeing their rumpled and disheveled son with nothing but disappointed contempt.
"I texted you! I told you I was out on a business meeting!" Alex had no time for an argument with his parents right now- or ever, for that matter- especially now his mind was ablaze with wondering about what it was that Miles could possibly spend his time doing that he was so desperate to keep him out of. None of the ideas he had were pleasant enough to want to dwell on- he evidently didn't run a large charity organisation or go around visiting sick kids. There was also something else he felt towards his business partner now, something that hadn't dissipated with his intoxication despite beginning with it. Alex had felt it in almost every meeting since the first one- that they were more at ease with each other than could be expected at such an early stage in the game. That, and... Well...
"One text doesn't mean you can stay out all night!"
The youngest Turner sighed as he was snapped out of his reverie. Despite only spending any real time with Miles the past twenty-four hours, Alex felt as though his eyes had been opened to something- he didn't have to live underneath his parents any more, he was old enough to make his own decisions and bright enough to understand that if he fucked up, it was a problem he was going to have to solve on his own. He'd felt that for a very long time actually, but now he had a genuine taste of freedom, something to invest time and money into and someone whose company he actually enjoyed- although he was ever so slightly intimidated by him- he resented this idea even more than he used to. Alex wasn't going to get his kicks by being rude to house guests anymore. He wanted more nights in Canary Wharf, more days in a hungover daze in more of Miles' company than he'd got today.
"I'm twenty three," he said simply, staring at his father and not allowing his tone to stray anywhere else. The fact he said it so plainly drove home what he was saying. He was an adult, and if he wanted to spend the night in Miles Kane's house, then he'd do it.
That seemed to only incense his father further, and he resented his mother for doing nothing more than standing next to him and nodding.
"Alexander! You are worth an awful lot of money, son." The last part of that sentence was almost whispered, agonised, and Alex felt another of the endless waves of exasperation towards his father. That was what everything came down to eventually, sooner or later. It wasn't anything to do with being worth the money since Alex wasn't exactly likely to be taken hostage in the middle of a champagne bar, it was the undying terror that his father had that Alex was going to do something stupid and someone was going to see him do it. The Turners were so influential that they did, in fairness, occasionally feature in newspapers and magazines- and his father's worst phobia seemed to be nothing other than Alex making a show of himself and dispelling the golden trophy family image they'd had to perfect over the years.
