It was quiet. It was so quiet that Alex fancied he could hear the blood thrumming through Miles' veins, the periodic thudding of Jamie's heart, the way the air filled Robert's lungs, the way that thoughts were firing through Will's brain with the force of a freight train.
This situation- this dead, aching silence in every tiny corner of Miles' main office- had come as a result of the worst car journey Alex had ever had in his life. Once he'd let go of Miles, the insane and ridiculous exchange of them kissing suddenly tasting sour in his mouth, he'd been promised answers. Answers that had something to do with that godforsaken tattoo; answers that wove in and out of all this money and men that went missing, with police tape in the garden and hideous holes in the lawn, with disgusting opulence and arrogance and a language that was nothing but exchanges in glances and veiled insinuations. But Miles' one condition was that he'd tell him only if the others were there- so they'd snuck out off the balcony and driven through the gathering dusk back to Miles' house with the leather of the interior feeling like sandpaper and every second that passed in silence like a hand around Alex's throat.
He couldn't decide which he needed to be more panicked over- the fact that he'd kissed Miles Kane with all the intensity of being ignored for twenty six years, or that the angular man had driven in complete silence with an expression so grave he almost looked in mourning. 'On edge' was an understatement for the way Alex felt deep in the pit of his stomach- he was already so far over the edge that he was moments away from a total, full blown panic.
There was no recollection of getting out of the car, he all of a sudden was just here- in the largest of Miles' offices- the communal one in the glass extension that had more computers than he could be bothered to count at the moment and where the rain had begun such an aggressive assault on the windows and the roof that it was a struggle to be heard. Or it would be, if anyone was speaking. But they weren't- the four other men were silent.
Miles was sitting opposite Alex, a gilded desk between them and a computer pushed to the side. Usually this room was illuminated by the glow of the screens but not now- all three of the secretaries had finished work for the day and every screen was still and black. It made it easier for Alex to look at Miles, his features softened by the gloom and without the accusation and knowledge of what they'd done that was burning a hole in his stomach. How could he have kissed him like that? How could he have kissed him at all?
No one else in the room knew, and it felt strange to Alex to be on a page that none of the others were. They were scattered around the room and not immediately visible- Robert was standing in the corner just behind Miles, his back straight and his arms folded. Robert was evidently a powerful man, he was at least six feet tall and with broad shoulders that strained against his button-up shirt, but he'd never seemed intimidating. Not until now anyway- because his sharp exterior wasn't counteracted by the usually bemused expression that he possessed and instead he looked grim and exasperated in his expectation. The fact that Robert evidently thought this was bad was really all the justification that Alex needed.
Will was sat to the side, his head resting on a balled fist. He seemed as collected as ever, though he was sporting a spectacular black eye for a reason that Alex was unaware of and his earring was catching the slightest bit of light, drawing the Turner's attention once again to the black mark behind his ear. Jamie was behind Alex- sitting cross legged on the largest of the windowsills, knowing what Miles was going to say and simply waiting for it to come out.
