Alex stared at the phone for a moment. He shouldn't answer it. He shouldn't. It wasn't his phone and it wasn't his business, and if there was only one thing he'd learned as a result of being around Miles and the people he'd spent the night in the casino with, it was that he was best off to stay out of other people's business. Especially when the business was Miles Kane's.

But the phone had been ringing all day with the determination of a hellsent demon. Miles hadn't been right, that much was evident, and it begged the question that if Alex didn't answer this phone now, following something that Jamie evidently thought was an emergency, what state of affairs were they going to return to tomorrow when they got back to London?

If Miles didn't care, then who would? Did Alex's naive curiosity take the place of the fact that the man who should care and should answer the phone was so out of his mind on expensive alcohol, wandering the streets of Chicago at unspeakable hours of the morning- because he didn't?

The ringing began to end its cycle, and before he'd thought about whether or not this was a good idea and whether or not he'd actually meant to do it, Alex had accepted the call and held the phone to his ear, horrified that his interest had gripped him with such an iron fist, especially since he of all people should know better.

As soon as the phone stopped ringing and the call connected, Jamie was shouting down the line.

"Where the fuck have you been all day? What the fuck are you playing at!"

Alex had never heard Jamie swear, so to hear him roar them down the line in quick succession made him anxious. But even without the uncharacteristic vocabulary, there was something in Jamie's voice that rose every single hair on the back of Alex's neck; because there was a panic in that voice, an undiluted and raw terror of a man who had been waiting for an answer that never came, waiting for a leader that never answered the phone. There was a horror that he wasn't holding back, the exclusive cold fear of being left alone when there was nothing worse to be done instead.

"Jamie..."

"Don't say a word, Miles!" Jamie was so het up and panicked that he'd not even noticed it wasn't his boss on the other end. "I've been going out of my mind all day! We are in so much trouble and yet you're fucking around in Chicago like this is no big deal!"

"Jamie!"

"You better have a good excuse because we are so fucked..." he tailed off, his voice becoming hollow before a strange kind of static silence filled the space where his spitting voice had been. "That's not Miles, is it?"

The confusion was seeping through the lines like poison. "Who is this?"

Alex swallowed hard, well aware that he was dangling on the precipice of huge trouble for answering a phonecall that wasn't meant for him. Especially since it was a phonecall that was meant for Miles. Alex liked Jamie, he was probably the only person that he'd met as a result of this situation that he did like- but would that change if he got caught poking his nose into places it didn't belong, yet again?

"It's, er," he cleared his throat, deciding it was best not to lie. "It's Alex."

Thankfully, Jamie seemed rather unfazed, still desperate in his actual intention. "Alex? Why have you answered? Where's Miles?"
