Oliver fixed his black tie before going to his kitchen. His mother turns and looks at him. "Are you ready to leave? I can drive you if you'd like." Oliver shakes his head. "I feel like walking today. Thanks though." She gives him one last hug before he leaves.
It's a dark and cloudy day. Only fitting for such an occasion. Oliver adjusts his suit jacket before continuing. He eventually reaches a church and heads inside.
Towards the front is an empty seat that Danny kept reserved. They give a small exchange before an older man comes to the podium. "Thank you all for coming. It does warm my heart to see that Paul had so many friends. We'll begin in a bit." Eventually, a song begins playing as the event begins.
A few people speak, including relatives and some friends, but to close out the ceremony, they had a girl come up.
"Hello everyone. I'm Daisy. Paul and I were dating for almost all of high school until...well, I just had a few words to say before I played my piece. Paul was the kind of person we all dreamed of. He did what he wanted but not only that, he was an intellectual. We would be talking about foreign and domestic policies one minute, and suddenly start talking about if Mike Wazzowski blinks or winks."
Everyone gives a small laugh before she continues talking.
"Paul was as nice a man as I ever saw and he was as fun a man as there ever was. He knew how to make people happy and he knew how to live life. He had a motto that he had planned on putting as his yearbook quote. Since he's no longer here, I'll share it."
She pulls out a piece of paper and reads "Life is like a job. It doesn't matter what you do as long as you're happy."
She puts the note away. "I think we can all learn from Paul. Live your life like there's no tomorrow. Do what makes you happy and live like Paul." She goes over to the piano and begins singing a beautiful rendition of "It is well with my soul." The vocals echo through the church as everyone is moved to tears. The ceremony comes to a close as everyone begins to leave.
As the crowd disperses, Oliver finds Daisy sitting alone near a lake outside of the church. He sits on the bench next to her. "I just wanted to say I'm sorry for your loss. That song was beautiful." Daisy smiles. "Thank you. I just...it's all so much. Life can literally change at the snap of a finger. I just hope Paul can look back on his life and smile."
Oliver thinks back to what Paul told him at the Halloween party before replying, "I think Paul can look back at his life and smile. He did what he wanted to do and most of all, he was happy. I do believe he was satisfied with his life." Daisy smiles before giving him a hug. "Thank you, Oliver. You're a good man."
She stands from the bench and brushes off her dress. "Some of us are heading over to Jessica's for a get together. Just to help comfort each other. Wanna go?" Oliver looks back at the lake. "Maybe later. I just wanna...think right now."
Daisy nods. "Sounds good. I'll see you later." She leaves as Oliver looks up at the sky. The clouds have slowly begun parting and the sun can finally be seen again.
