Chapter 6 Part 2

"Ok then lemme just call him over", Maggie said with a crooked smile. She walked out with her old cell phone, probably to look for signal. I sat in my seat and waited for her to come back. About a minute later she jogged in. "Hey, Danica, Chelsea just called, I need to pick her up early from the high school, but we need to catch up on some things, maybe you can come over for dinner. Oh! And Josh said he'd love to help you and he's coming by now", she said in a rush. I smiled a little," Thanks Auntie, id love to have dinner with you guys, I miss my old family". We exchanged numbers and she drove off in her old ford pickup truck. I walked back inside and went to the kitchen. Grabbing bottled water I looked out the window to see the view. Far back behind the little town, was a chain of mountains. Fog was surrounding them, but you can see the fuzzy outlines of trees and some cabins tucked away in the forest. The sun was up high now, shining bright behind clean white clouds. It was breathtaking. Everything here was beautiful and different, but with a homey feeling. I felt better, just a little bit, but even the most beautiful landscape can't make me forget everything that has happened over the past month. A silent tear escaped my eye. I struggled to keep the rest of the tears from pouring down my face. I gripped the counter and lowered my head, breathing in and out heavily. Finally I calmed down. I splashed water on my face. Just then a knock came from the front door. Josh. I speed walked to the door and opened it. "Howdy, you must be Danica, my name is Josh, Maggie told me you might need my help" Josh said. Josh had a muscular body and tanned skinned, probably from working outside in the heat of Georgia summer, his light brown hair had streaks of blonde in it, bleached by the sun, and he was tall, maybe 6'2. And his eyes, I hate to admit, were a stunning sky blue, with a darker blue rim. His country accent was, adorable considering the amazing smile he flashed at me. Usually girls would swoon over him and drool, but not me. I looked at him in the eye and said, "Yep, im Danica. Come inside; ill tell you what I want to do with the place". He noticed my expression because he quickly followed me to the living room. "So why did you move to the middle of no where, population 1000", he said still smiling. He seemed unfazed from my rude, quick action attitude. "Well I just needed to get away from the busy city, needed a new change. I used to live her when I was younger, so I though Why not?" we sat down across from each other on the couches. "That's cool, I moved here about 6 years ago from Tennessee, im a country boy, lived in small towns all my life". He never left his eyes off me, and I couldn't help but look away from his intense stare. "Well, you're going to help me fix up my house right?" I said. "Yea, so what were you thinking of doing?" "Well. I wanted to set up some Wi-Fi, then I wanted to fix up the deck and the porch, and I want to get some modern technology, and give the whole house a fresh new paint job, I still want to keep the old fashion, traditional look, but I just need to liven it up." I said. He looked up at the ceiling with a thinking face on. "Ok, we'll have to go uptown for most of the stuff, but we could do that. It's going to take awhile though, you sure you're up to it?" I looked at him with a determined look. "Yes, im up for it, are you?" he raised his hands up in mock surrender and laughed, "Hey! It's just that a city girl like you doesn't know how to do some hard labor", he said it innocently, but I was still a little angry. "Well you might have met some city girls, but you haven't met one like me, so watch this city girl work", I said while getting up and grabbing my bag. He got up and chuckled. I got my leather jacket off the coat rack and slid on my black cowgirl boots. I opened the door and Josh walked out behind me. "Were gunna go in my car, if that's all right with you", he said. "Ya sure, I don't know were anything is anyway so you can drive", I said. I climbed into his red Chevy pickup truck. The ride to up town was long, and quiet. But it was a comfortable silence. I looked out the window and watched the mountains, and various farms pass by. I didn't notice that Josh was calling me until he started shaking my shoulders. "Danica? Hello?" "Oh! Sorry what were you saying?" he chuckled. "Well I was just saying that were here." I looked out and sure enough we were in front of a Home Depot. "I thought we could get most of our stuff here", he said while turning off the ignition. I was about to open the door but he beat me to it. "I can open the door myself, but thanks". I hopped down and walked toward the entrance. First thing we did was get paint. I picked the red color for the door, a creamy white for the house exterior, a sky blue for the guest rooms, and a gold color for the master room and for some of the interior. Next we got wood for the deck and porch, it was a lot of wood but Josh seemed like he new what he was doing, I got a couple of rocking chairs and some chairs for the porch and a new welcome mat. They didn't have the Wi-Fi connection wires, so we had to go to another store. We went to go pay for the things that we got. "Hey Josh, starting another project again? Who's this?" said the cashier. The cashier looked about our age, he had blonde hair, and brown eyes, his Home Depot tag had the name Adam scrawled across it. He wasn't as tall as Josh, but he was taller than me. He was looking me up and down, and it was kind of creepy, but I didn't show any emotion. "Hey Adam, this is Danica Walker, she just moved in to the old house up the trail, I'm helping her fix it up", he said while moving closer to me, probably sensing his friends 'stare. "Well, hello there, my name is Adam Evergreen. I live a couple houses down from your house" he said while putting his hand out for a shake. I gripped his hand and shook it. "Wow firm grip, I like it", I let go. He started ringing up the stuff. "So were you from Danica". "California, but I used to live here when I was younger". I said. "Oh, well we got ourselves a city girl, I used to live about an hour away, but my family moved here after our town got hit by a crazy storm." He finished and said, "Ok that'll be $764.87." I whipped out my wallet, just as Josh took out his. "Ill pay", we said at the same time. He smirked. "It's my house, ill pay for it." I said sternly. "Look, I'm helping you fix this, just think of it as a welcoming home present". "No, I'm going to pay. I don't need you to pay for this when it's for me anyway." I was already counting my money, but Josh handed Adam some crinkly bills. "Im paying." He said. Adam, with an amused face, rang up the order, and gave Josh some change. I was angry. Im an independent women, I don't need to have him pay for my things. "Have a nice day", said Adam, suppressing his laughter. I grabbed the cart and pushed it to his cart. Josh strolled along behind me, looking triumphant. I stuffed the things we bought in the back of the truck and stomped to the passenger's side. Josh, of course being a gentleman opened the door for me, which got me angrier. He jumped to the driver's seat and started the engine. He looked towards me and said," You know, most girls would be happy that a guy bought her things.", "Well, if you haven't noticed im not like other girls". "I see that", he mumbled. I looked at the clock and it said 12:54 p.m. my stomach grumbled. He laughed. "I guess we should eat lunch now?" I blushed a little, but it quickly went away. "Ya im starving!! Where's a good place to eat?" I said a teensy bit excited. "We could go to the diner in town, Gary makes the best burgers". Mmmm! At the sound of burgers my stomach grumbled again. "You're a funny little thing aren't you?" "You have no idea". He glanced at me for a second, and then looked towards the road again. We got to the diner and it looked like a retro 60s diner that has been open for along time. The town looked old, like the little stores have been there since the 1900s. But it matched the atmosphere. Josh opened the door for me and we walked in. "Hey, Josh!" "What's up Josh?" "Who's that Josh?" was what all the people in the diner said. I remember when I lived here, everyone new everyone so of course they all new Josh and they were wondering who the new girl is. "Hey guys, this is Danica Walkers, she used to live here when she was younger and she just moved back today." Josh said looking around and waving to everyone. "Danica! Oh my gosh! I new it was you!" "Danica I haven't seen you since you were a little girl", "Danica? Wow you changed so much!" Everyone got up from there seats to give me hugs. The first one that came over was a girl that looked my age, with a group of girls and boys behind her. She came rushing to me, her red curls bouncing behind her, and I immediately new who it was. "Chelsea!!!" "D! You remember!" I gave her a big hug. She was petite and her green eyes were shining. "Omg! D I've missed you! I haven't seen you in what 10 years!" "Ya wow you look great!" "Thanks! Are you kidding me you look amazing!". "Danica! Do you remember me?" I looked behind Chelsea to see a tall guy with black hair and grey eyes. He looked muscular, but not as muscular as Josh. "Jamie? Wow! You used to play with me and Chelsea when we were little! And you always blamed me for the messes." I pouted but gave him a hug. He stepped back and wrapped an arm around Chelsea. I gave her a look and raised my eyebrows. She blushed and mouthed "We'll talk later". I met everyone else and realized that we all used to play with each other back when we were younger. Everyone gave me hugs and I remembered all of them. They told me how big I got, and how beautiful I got, and I returned the compliments. Josh was behind me the whole time, just watching me quietly. I glanced at him a couple of times but he looked away and greeted other people. He was nice to everyone, telling them good things. I noticed that most of the girls were staring at Josh, but I shook it off and mentally scolded myself for feeling a little jealous. After everyone got back to there tables I sat on a stool and Josh sat down next to me. "Hey sweetie, what can I get you?" said the waitress, who I remembered as Shirley. She had gray hair tied in a bun and she was the sweetest lady. She reminded me of a grandma that bakes you cookies for no reason. "Hello Shirley, ill have a bacon cheeseburger, with fries and a chocolate milkshake". Josh ordered. "And what about you Danica, I remember what you used to order all the time vanilla milkshake and French fries". I chuckled. "Hi Shirley, ill have a cheeseburger with the works, French fries, and a vanilla milkshake." "Coming right up Darlin'" I smiled a little and looked around. "Not much has changed here, seems like everyone likes you". Josh said smiling. "Ya, I didn't realize this but I missed it here, everyone's so friendly". "So, tell me about yourself", Josh said, looking at me expectedly. "Well, im 19, I finished college early, and in California I worked in a 5 star restaurant. I always dreamed of opening a famous restaurant." Josh interrupted "So you like to cook?", "I love to cook" "Any boyfriends?" Josh said, he was smiling but his eyes were serious. My heart stopped. Then my breathing labored. I felt tears prick my eyes and my head was pounding. "Iii I need some air". I stuttered and ran outside. I kept running till I reached a swing set. It was in the middle of the town. The swing was tied to a tree by ropes and a wooden board was the seat. It brought back memories of me playing on the swings, my mother pushing me up and I felt like I was flying, the sun shining through the leaves of the big oak. I sat on the swing and just let the tears fall. I was sobbing loudly and I didn't hear someone come towards me. "Oh Danica, im so sorry I didn't realize... im sorry" said a voice that I automatically new was Josh. He wrapped his arms around me and let me cry on his shoulder. I was wetting his blue t-shirt, but he didn't seem to mind. After a while my crying turned to hiccups. "It's not your fault, you didn't know." I blubbered. "No, it is my fault; I didn't know you had a bad break-up, but-""We didn't break-up" I said. "Oh well, im still sorry. Do you want to talk about it?" "NO!" I said loudly. He kind of jumped when I screamed, but he didn't show it. "Ok, im sorry. Why don't we just go back and eat, then ill drop you off and we can start fixing your house tomorrow." "Ok". He lifted me up and wiped some stray tears away from my face. He grabbed my hand lightly, like I was as fragile as a piece of glass. We walked to the diner and finished our food quietly. No one commented on my running away, so I guess Josh told them something. I don't want anyone to know about my past. About.... Him. Or the baby, but people are going to find out soon when my stomach starts growing. I guess I need to tell someone about everything. At least one person because its going to be hard to keep these secrets. Josh, Josh knows too much. I guess I'm going to have to explain about my breakdown. I don't know why but I feel safe around him, and weirdly calm. Like I should be there, with him. And I don't like it.
