It’s been two days since the interference, I wish I could say I was sleeping better but I wasn’t, Suriya was coming back today, the connection is back so she contacted me. I have to work on Thursday and I still haven’t bought that new skirt Adam my boss asked me to, the summer heat was making me dizzy, ken would be picking Suriya up since I don’t have a license, I am making her favourite dish, lasagne. I carried own doing my normal routine, going into town picking things up, stopping by for a chat with the neighbours, helping Catherine with the children. Everything should seem fine but it wasn’t, I was getting frustrated by the minute, where was my sunny nature? I am never usually down for a long time. Even my own shortcomings didn’t bother me much. I kept thinking about him, last night I woke up thinking there was thud on the door, I was thinking maybe he came back, or he was even worse. I haven’t seen him at all, no one has or they would have said. They would not make the connection back to me; however it was a small town talk gets around. Has he left? He did say he will give me the money back before he leaves. Where is he now?
“Of course not don’t be absurd.” A high shriek was coming towards me. I turned and there she was my sister, my sophisticated, hardworking sister. She snapped her phone and gave me a broad smile pulling me towards her. She stroked my hair and I squeezed her, I missed her a lot even though she was only away for 4 days.
“How have you been?” she asked me
“Good, you?”
“So, so.” She moved to look into the oven and smiled bigger.
“I made yo…” there was a ringing coming from her bag
“Hold that thought.” She began talking into her phone about numbers and sales and I couldn’t keep up. She was like that, always busy, even though she was only 26, she acted older, always looking out for me, I felt the weight off my burden about Arman lift as I was looking forward to telling her how I helped him all by myself. It wasn’t a great achievement but I felt proud. Even though there was a gap between us since our mother died, we still understand each other. She walked off into the longue as ken walked into the kitchen heading straight for the fridge.
“Hey” he called out with his head bowed looking for food.
“Hey” I replied, ken was Suriya’s boyfriend, they have been together for 3 years, she’s hoping he will soon ask her to marry him, I wish he won’t. He’s not a bad guy, it’s just he doesn’t love her and Suriya deserves love. He stays over sometimes, that’s when I head off to my friend’s house to give them space.
“Smells good.” He said peeking into the oven.
“It’s nearly done”
“So what have you been up to?” he inquired
I bit my bottom lip, I don’t like lying but I was not going to tell him about Arman.
“Nothing much.” I walked off to find Suriya she was still on the phone and I still couldn’t keep up.
“That was great.” Ken said rubbing his tummy.
“Thanks so much darling, I missed your cooking.” She spoke fondly rubbing my arm.
“So tell me, how was the trip?” I prodded
“Ughh, they want us to back off, because they think our share will cut them losses, they think Chaplin’s will be better. So I have to head off again soon with a new presentation. If you ask me it’s all a load of bullshit. Sorry.” He smiled apologetically at her language. I smiled and asked
