The sun is shining through my one, single bedroom window in front of my bed. It is beautiful. You can see the light streaming through the blinds.
But, right when I’m relaxed, by alarm clock starts screaming at me to wake up, even though I’m already awake. But I have to get up, because its school.
I sit up in my bed, and rest my feet on the ground beside my bed. The cold of the tile shoots through my legs like a lightning bolt and instantly makes me more awake. I have a shower and get dressed. I start down the hallway in my house that leads towards the kitchen. I hear the faint echo of voices coming from the end of the hall.
“Mom, can I please have some cereal?” My brother Alex asked my mom.
“Alex, you need something more filling. Like eggs or something. Go make some,” My mom sees me come out of the hall and into the kitchen, “Good morning Josh, how was your sleep?” she asks me.
My brother grunts as he walks to the refrigerator to make some eggs for himself.
“It was good, but I had a very weird dream last night. Madison died in it, and I couldn’t do anything to help,” I tell her as I walk over to the kitchen cabinets. I open the door and get a bowl, walk over to the fridge, reach over Alex to get the milk. I go to the pantry and get cereal, and pour both into my bowl.
“Hey!” Alex gives me a look of disgust as he starts to boil his egg at the stove.
“Alex, listen to mom.” I order him, but have a slight hint of humor in my voice because that’s when he punches my arm.
“Well, at least it was just a dream!” My Mom assures me as she shoots Alex a disapproving look. He goes back to making his eggs on the stove. All I can think of was just how real it seemed.
“Yeah, it just felt so real though,” I can’t help but make a depressed face. It really bothered me.
“Josh, sometimes dreams just feel like they’re really happening, but they aren’t. Don’t get all worried about it,” she says trying to comfort me. She walks over to me, and she taps her finger against my forehead, and looks at me, “it’s all in your mind”
The rest of the morning goes on without a hitch. The bus to school was loud and bumpy as usual. But on the bright side, my Mason is on my bus, so we always talk. School was boring (but really, when isn’t it?).
At the end of the day, Me and all of my friends go down to the candy shop on third street, as we have for the last few years. Madison was at school and smiling today, as usual. Those loving hazel eyes were bright and happy, not dead like in my dream.
“Alex, what are you thinking of getting?” asked Mason.
I sigh, trying to make up my mind while standing in front of hundreds of multi-colored pieces of sugar goodness. “I’m thinking the Nerds, they always make me happy, and we have been good friends for a long time. I don’t want to break their candy-coated heart!”I say jokingly, and right when I finish everyone chuckles a bit. I turn to Madison, who is in the chocolate section of the store. “Madison, are you getting your usual turtles?”
“Yeah, I think I will.” She tells me, while staring at all the different types of chocolate.
“Aren’t you going to change it up one of these days? You have gotten Turtles for the last few years, and you haven’t ever tried something different!”
“Yes, but I love them, they are amazing!” she explains to me, giving me a smile. “Harry! Where are you?” She asks, as Harry jumps up and all you see is his head above the aisles going up and down, then back up again.
“Yes Maddy?” He asks walking back to us. Madison’s cheeks start to go red and a large smile invades her face. She tries to hide it, but she can’t.
“I thought I lost you. You are the child of the mother who invented the saying ‘Kid in a candy store’” she admitted, giving Harry a playful slap on the shoulder.
“Well then, you better not bring me here again, should you?” He gave her a hug then his lips met her forehead. They both laughed a bit, and hugged each other. Out of the corner I could see their lips touch together, and their heads started to move in unison.
“OHHHHHH!,” I said quite loudly, sounding like a little child who got a hug from a girl, way back at the age when “Cooties” were still around, “THAT’S GROSS!” I scrunched my nose to bug them. But it made the lady at the cash register shoot me a glance to shut up. I started laughing with Mason.
“Oh, get a room!” Mason and I said simultaneously as I looked down at the nerds, and he looked up at Harry and Madison.
“Shut up guys!” Madison pulled her head away from Harry’s face, and her cheeks were insanely red, but Harry kept hugging her. He shot us a glance, but you could tell by his face, that he was resisting a smile. But a few seconds later, a little smile formed on his face.
All four of us walked up to the cashier and places the multitude of colorful bags on the table. “Is that all?” the older lady who had a red apron with the words ‘Sweet Tooth’ on it in the shape of liquorice. She had grey hair that had probably a bottle of hair spray in it to keep it up. Because whenever she moved or shook her head, it wouldn’t budge.
“Yes, this is all.” I handed her twenty dollars, as we left the store. We were just opening the door to exit, when she finished putting the money into the cash register.
“Have a wonderful day! And I will see you guys tomorrow.” She notified us.
“And we will see you too!” all four of us said at the same time. We all said our good-byes, and headed our separate ways back to our houses. And as expected, Harry and Madison’s hands were intertwined and they were walking back to their houses.
That night is pretty bland. My parents, Alex, and I all sit in the living room and talk. We talk about how each other’s day went. My Mom is a doctor at the hospital in town. She usually works at night, so I am able to see her before and after school. Tonight she is off work because it is Friday, and the start of the weekend.
My dad is a real estate agent. He has pretty flexible hours, which is nice because him and I will go hunting together sometimes. He was the one that taught me to hunt, and he was also the one that bought me the amazing bow that I still use today. But lately he hasn’t wanted to go hunting with me, so I go out by myself.
And that leaves my brother. Oh, my brother. He is fourteen, but he can act like he’s either an adult, or a five-year-old child. Around his friends he is a clown that makes everyone laugh, and around adults, he is very mature. He has grown up so quick, its saddening. But, he is also very, VERY annoying. So I guess I’m happy that he is growing up, because he will be able to be mature all the time and not be so annoying.
By the sounds of it, everyone had a very good day.
