ADELINE SMILED AS she head the door open, the little bell hung just above the door ringing. It was a boring day, some mortals coming in and out with occasional small gods and immortals.
She turned around and saw 3 demigods walk in.
Two girls, one blonde and one dark-haired, and a tall boy with sandy blonde hair. They looked tired and worn-out with their ripped clothing and bruises that were dotted around their arms.
"Oh, um... The hospital is that way?" Adeline said, pointing north, but it came out more like a question.
"Are you some kind of ghost?" The dark-haired girl asked, confused.
Adeline put her hands on her hips, offended. "A spirit, actually. Are you some kind of goth?"
The girl raised a eyebrow. "I didn't mean it like that—"
"Look, we need some ambrosia." The boy interrupted, then pausing and adding, "Please."
The smaller blonde girl held out some golden drachmas in her palm, sliding it across the front desk. They looked incredibly desperate.
Huffing, Adeline walked through the desk. "Follow me."
Walking through a set of doors, she brushed past some harpies that were unloading some new deliveries. Looking behind her, she checked if the three demigods were still following her.
They were looking around in awe. Adeline didn't blame them. Working here for a month, she got used to the tall ceilings and shelves that could probably carry a small house. The chariots and trucks came in on the loading dock which was as big as a soccer field.
"Excuse me, miss." The boy said, tapping her shoulder but his finger went right through her. "Oh... Um,"
"Yes?" Adeline said, not stopping.
"I was wondering if... Um, if Hermes might be here?" He asked, he looked nervous.
Adeline instantly made the connections. Judging from his pale blue eyes that reminded him of Hermes, she guessed that this was his son. She felt bad for him. Demigods barely met their godly parent, unlike Adeline who was always with her father, Aeolus, when she was younger.
"No, sorry." She said, softly.
He just nodded, almost like he expected it. But it didn't stop the sadness in his eyes from leaking.
The dark-haired girl put a hand on the boys shoulder, comforting him, silently.
Walking through another door, she showed them the stash of ambrosia and nectar.
Adeline felt bad for them, she could see the struggle that they went through. She heard from her father that demigods had this camp in New York somewhere and not many make it there.
"Treat yourself." She said, handing them a plastic bag full of ambrosia.
