"A Selection. Are you absolutely serious? A Selection?" My dad paces around his office.

"So apparently I'm not worthy of love and I don't get to find it?" I fight back.

"No, but you're going at an incredibly fast speed. A couple days ago you decided to be queen. This morning, you decide you want a Selection. Tomorrow, you'll probably make the decision to have a child!" He sits down.

"Maybe I want a Selection." I firmly say.

"Maybe you'll be making the wrong choices if you do."

I sit across the table from my dad. I haven't thought about this yet.

My dad continues. "Of course, every heir has had a selection, following by Gregory's son. That was almost 100 years ago. Every Selection has been a success, except Abby's situation, but you understand."

Abby is my great-great grandmother, who had a selection 80 years ago. The nation adored her, but from what I've heard, she was terrible and cruel. She poisoned her husband from the Selection, and chose her husband's cousin instead, Porter. But, Abby's first husband's death was concealed and Abby and Porter got married, however, their marriage was harming. But, then again, the world didn't know that.

"If you marry a suitor from the Selection, and the entire relationship doesn't work out, that's going to be horrible. The country will never see you the same again." My dad sighs.

"I'm going to find a husband in this process." I quietly say.

"I can only pray that you will." My dad says, and looks away.

My mom comes walking into the office.

"Did you get Marid to calm down?" My dad asks.

"Well, we tried. Again, he's one little stubborn thing. Ever since his parents died in the car accident, he's constantly been trying to get back into the media. We eventually sent him to stay in Baffin under probation. Who knows what he'll do there." My mom sits down as well.

"Well, that's a good start." I reply.

"I feel like I could have done better. Really, the better choice was to send him to the Caucasian islands, where he'd be isolated, but I wanted to put him under probation, and sending government people to a stranded island in the ocean is difficult. Baffin was the best they could offer." She said.

We all sat in silence. My mom looked at her nails before speaking.

"What did you guys think of the Selection?" She said, not looking up.

"I'm going to say a solid maybe." My dad firmly replies.

"I really just need a husband. I can't rule on my own." I truthfully say.

"I mean, I see where your father is coming from. I don't want you to back out on all of this after one week. You really need to know if this is what you truly want." She nods.

"Oh my God, how many times can I say that I really just want a Selection?!" I snap.

Not the best decision to do as an heir.

My parents glance at each other, hesitating to say something more.

"It's almost dinner. I'm going to take dinner in my room tonight." I say, before getting up and walking out the door, leaving my parents in the room.

After the door is shut, I pull off my high heels and run barefoot upstairs to my room. Once I get to my door, I can feel tears welling up in my eyes.

"Your Highness." My maid says, as I drop my heels on the floor.

I sigh. "Take the night off. I don't need your help tonight." I cry.

"Is there anything that I can do for-"

"No." I say, strictly interrupting her.

"Yes, Your Highness. Good night." She curtsies, before walking out.

I walk to my bed and stare at the ceiling, before falling down on the bed.

Is it really bad to want something that you've never had? I want love. That's what I want. I live in this glorious palace with food and clothes and money and fame. Anyone in Illea would die to have my spot. But when I go to provinces like Zuni, where the poverty rate is higher and there are more people, they don't have money, clothes, fame, possessions, some don't even have a home. But the one thing they have in their life, that I don't have, is love.

The one thing that any person in the world could have is love.

And I have the feeling that I'll never get it.
