"Ah, it's time at last. The 75th annual hunger games, with a twist! It's, yes, the Quarter Quell ladies and gentlemen!" Caesar Flickerman shouts with his usual cheesy Capitol smile.
I wonder why President Snow wanted him to host this, or anyone for the matter. I mean everyone knows he hosts almost everything (including the Hunger Games) but never the Quarter Quell. The box opening is usually not in a interview type format but a more formal one. Though I guess I'm not going to be the one to complain about the location of this, it's wrong no matter where it's held.
My mind starts to wonder off, but then something on the television catches my eye.
I see him. I make a sickening eye contact with him through the screen. A snake suddenly slithers onto the stage and I want to shatter this television at this very moment in hopes that I will break him as well, but I have more self control than that. So I sit, watching this like everyone else in Panem. Scared of that snake on my television who could strike at any moment and kill whoever it feels the need to.
He walks onto the stage with, as usual, no facial expressions at all. A blank face. It shows no sympathy, and it will never because President Snow is not normal, no, not at all. He is more like a messed up killing device that can kill without fear whatsoever. This is just one of the many, many, reasons why everyone in Panem (mostly the districts) fear him the way they do. He sees power, grabs hold of it and never let's go. He has made himself mad with power. This thought makes me sick to my stomach and I have to leave the room for a minute.
When I return it is is only because I hear the room fall silent for a moment and then without warning hear glass shattering screams of terror and over the top gasps. Although I know for a fact that this is just on the television I still rush into the living room to see what had happened in the short time I was away.
I see my mother and prim sitting on the couch with there mouths open like they want to say something but can't find the words. Then they turn to me and prim let's out a huge smile as she exhales then wraps her arms around me and I hug her back. Although I have no idea why she's so happy. She holds on for a good five minutes until she finally lets go to say two quiet words.
"You're staying." She says this as she looks into my eyes and grins like she has never been happier.
This makes me even more confused and look up to see my mother smiling too, like she's lost in a daydream. What dose she mean? Did the note say that there will be no mentors this year? That the mentors will only mentor by video? Or by note? All seem impossible but I'm racking my brain trying to figure it out when Peeta bursts into the room and wraps his arms around me, then prim, and I'm a bit taken back, I thought we weren't even on speaking terms. But whatever I missed on the television must have been big.
"What happened?" I ask to no one in particular.
"You mean you didn't see?" asks Peeta with a shocked expression.
"No, I left the room while they announced it." I tell him.
"Close your eyes," he tells me with a small happy laugh at the end.
And so I do. And then, without any notice, I find myself being dragged out of my house by Peeta. Not in a peacekeeper dragging way, but a fun, playful one. I try to ask where we're going but he keeps telling me that it's a surprise.
When we stop he tells me to open my eyes and when I do, I see the streets full of people, not the sad, gloomy people you would normally see in district 12. But happy, dancing people laughing and having the time of their lives, even if they may be dying from hunger or illness, they are happy and I can't help smile too at the sight of this.
I start to speak but he cuts me off.
"Let the 75th annual Capitol Games..." he says to me.
A long pause where I comprehend what he's saying.
"Begin," I finish.✨This is the end of chapter one! Thanks for reading and I know this chapter was a little boring but the next few chapters will be better. Promise XD The next chapter will be up tomorrow!✨
