Four Months

In almost no time at all, four months had passed. Four months since Soal's journey to 2019. Four months since he met Isabel. Four months since he met Alice. Four months since he had last seen Irene.

Much had happened, as well. After Alice unofficially adopted him, Soal had been switching places with Isabel over one-week intervals, residing with the loving Heather and Milton one week, with Alice for the next. This was primarily because of Alice's financial status, but Soal wished that he could live with Alice and Isabel full-time. He just wanted to stay in one place. And he personally (and secretly) disliked the notion of Alice's eventual marriage, which was inevitable. He had met her fiancee, if only for a moment, and he seemed rather likeable; but it was the man's daughters that disgusted Soal. Alice was a single parent, divorced after Isabel's birth. But the "hardworking man" she was to marry had two children after a divorce, both snobbish high-school girls; exactly the archetype Soal did not want. At least they were not quite snobbish, lava-headed rats.

Soal was glad to have a family, but he quickly had fallen into a depression. With each day that passed, he fell deeper into a longing for all of his friends from 2094, and Irene in particular. He was simply awaiting a situation that would draw her back to him, or vice versa. But that time did not seem to be coming soon.

That is, until now.
