"How could a guy leave a sexy lady like you all alone?" the man asked with that suspicious grin.
You could smell the smoke on his breath, but you stared at the counter and pretended to ignore him, not knowing how to respond.
"Not gonna answer me huh? I don't bite, well usually" he said as he playfully pushed your arm.
"Don't touch me" you said with what you hoped was an intimidating voice, not removing your eyes from the table.
"Playing hard to get is that right? I bet I could loosen you up" he continued to talk to you.
"Please go away" you said, trying to mask the quiver in your voice.
"Come on pretty lady, lemme take you back to my apartment" he said as he got as close as possible and whispered in your ear, "I will f*ck you up."
He began to reach for your chest area, but you pushed his hand away. You tried to back away from him, but he had grabbed onto your arm so you couldn't get away. How was no one else in the room realizing what was going on?!
"Get away from me!" you demanded, your voice rising louder.
You heard a familiar voice yell, "What the hell do you think you're doing?"
Nick had finally come out of the bathroom and was storming over to you and the man, whose hand was still firmly grabbing your wrist.
"Get your hand off of my girl!" Nick yelled at him.
"And what if I don't?" the creep questioned with a smirk.
"Then I'll make you regret it!" Nick said. "Get away from her. You heard her, she doesn't want anything to do with you."
The man dropped your arm and got up in Nick's face.
"You can't tell me what to do!" he yelled.
By now, the argument was loud enough that everyone in the bar heard, and was watching. Joe rushed over and pulled the man away from Nick before any punches were thrown.
"Go back to your seat or I'll call the cops man" he said to the guy. "Nick, take Y/n and get outta here. I'll make sure this guy doesn't follow after you."
Nick grabbed your hand and the two of you rushed out of the pub. You both stayed silent and kept walking away from there as fast as possible without running. Once you were a safe distance away, Nick dropped your hand and turned to face you. He looked you over to make sure you were visibly ok.
"Y/n, I'm so sorry that happened. Are you alright? Did he hurt you?" he asked you with a concerned look on his face.
You reached down and pulled up your sleeve to look at where he had grasped you. Nick gasped when he saw four large marks the size and shape of the man's fingers. You hadn't realized he held you hard enough to leave bruises.
"Oh my god. Y/n! Are you ok? Do you need to go to the hospital?" he asked, even more concerned.
You had been looking at the ground the whole time because you knew you would cry if you looked at Nick.
You managed to squeak out, "No, I'll be fine."
As you looked up at him, you saw his eyes scan over you again to see if you were as ok as you were trying to make yourself seem. That's when tears began to stream down your face. You couldn't stop, and you were soon at the point of sobbing.
"Oh Y/n" Nick said as he pulled you into his chest. His large arms wrapped around your back and pulled you close, into his warm body. Your face rested against his chest just under his shoulder, with your arms wrapped around him.
He rested his face in the dip of your shoulder and quietly whispered, "Shhh," in your ear to try to calm you down and stop you from shaking. After a minute of standing like this, he pulled you away from him to look you over again.
"Other than your wrist, did he hurt you or put your hands on you at all?" Nick asked gently, but in a serious tone.
In between sobs, you answered, "He...h-he tried to grab my b-boobs, but I stopped him. And...and h-he, he said that he w-was going to t-take me to his apartment a-and 'f-f*ck me up.'"
"Oh my god, Y/n! I'm so so sorry" Nick said as he pulled you back into his chest.
He stood there with his arms wrapped firmly around you, his head resting on yours until you started to calm down. People and cars were going by and watching you, but it felt like it was just the two of you and no one else existed.
Once you stopped crying, Nick pulled back to look at you again. He reached up and wiped a tear from your cheek with his thumb.
"I won't ever let anything happen like this or leave your side again. I promise" he said.
You gave him a small smile.
"What do you want me to do? I can call the police, or your friends...do you want to just go home?" he asked.
"No. I'm ok. I honestly just want to forget about it. And no, I don't want to go home. I want to stay with you" you said, as you pushed yourself back up against him.
"Ok" he said as he hugged you tight again.
You could feel the vibration of his voice through your body as he said, "Whatever you want."
You stood like that for a little longer and then turned around and started to walk again. You walked hand in hand with Nick down the street in search of a place to sit down. Eventually, you found a bench and sat down.
"I'm sorry I called you 'my girl' back in there, I just wanted to get him away from you" Nick explained.
"Why are you sorry?" you looked at him with a confused look on your face. "Am I not your girl?"
"Oh" he said and looked at you. His face curved up into his signature grin. "No no no, of course you are. I just didn't know you were ok with it. Here, let me make it more official."
He turned to you, placed your hand in his, and asked, "Y/n y/middle/n y/last/n, will you be my girlfriend?"
You looked at him with a big smile, giggled, and said, "I thought I already was."
Nick laughed and smiled at you. You slid over on the bench so that you were pressed up against his side, and rested your head on his shoulder. He gently squeezed your hand and then let it go. He moved his arm and placed it around your shoulder, pulling you even more impossibly close, and then leaned his head against yours.
"Don't worry Y/n. You are safe with me. I won't ever let another man touch you" he said.
You responded by leaning into him even more.
Even though part of the night had been pretty rough, it ended up being amazing. You and Nick had officially become a couple, and you were cuddled up next to him on a bench in Chicago. It was like something out of one of your childhood dreams, and you felt like you should be waking up any second. But, the longer you sat there, the more you realized it was real, and that made you the happiest woman on earth.
*Nick's P.O.V*
As I sat there with my arm around Y/n, her body pressed up close to mine, I thought about how lucky I was. I just happened to go to the same baseball game as the best girl ever, and then she just happened to become my girl. At that moment, as long as Y/n was in my arms, I would be the happiest man on Earth.
