Then I sprinted out
As I'm walking my phone starts to ring I read the caller ID. "Hey Connor just told me. You okay?" It's my friend Joseph Smith. Connor introduced us our freshman year.
"Yeah, Joey. I'm fine."
"Beth, when you say I'm fine that usually means 'I'm trying not to hit a wall." He says extremely concerned about my surroundings.
"I'm fine. Really. I was waiting for this to happen." I really was that's the sad part. In my life everyone really leaves. My dad left, my grandparents don't speak to me, and Adrian...
"Joey, can I call you later?"
"Yeah, but if I haven't heard from you in at least 24 hours and there's trees falling down everywhere I'll call the cops, okay?"
I laugh at his comment. "Yeah if I can't I'll have Connor call you or something. Bye." With that I hang up. These wet things on my checks won't go away. What are these things.
Tears
They can't be I've never cried. Even with all I've been through I've never cried.
Maybe their all the tears you haven't wept.
The voices return. Why won't you leave me alone.
We can't we'll be here forever.
With that I run to get away from everything, everyone. All I want is to disappear. But I can't. So I run and run and run. Into the woods pass trees, streams, and bushes, till I find what I came all this way for. I only have one relative I speak to other than my brothers, my only grandparent that will speak to me, Nana.
"Honey, slow down," she says as I fall on here porch. She's 59, with shiny silver hair. She's wearing blue jeans and a plain gray T-shirt I bought her for Christmas. I lay my head in her lap.
"She's leaving. She's finally leaving." I cried a little more. Nana took off my hat and brushed my hair, its always calmed me down.
She smiles at me, "At least we know your slightly human."I chuckle at her statement. Then hear them, my brothers. They come running as fast as I was almost missing the porch. "Nana, why do they always leave?" Me and brothers haven't had many friends or relationships. They call us freaks. When we do make friends, they always leave.
"I don't know, honey. But know this they come back."
Dylan was still angry and punches the nearest tree. "No one has come back, Nana. Your the only one that stays." After a few minutes of us all crying on Nana, we finally collected ourselves, said our good byes then headed home.
We ran. Running was our escape. We'd run when were upset to get away from everything, everyone, and IT. Usually we would run through the woods for a couple hours then we'd go home and act as though nothing happened.
We reach home and see a car outside. I guess Jake is already here. My brothers get angry and I hold both of their hands. We walk into the living room to see them smiling and talking. Momma looks at us. "How is she?" She is our mother so she knew where we were.
"Fine. Is this Jake?" I question looking at the man sitting in front of us. He's 6'1 with brown hair and blue eyes. He's wearing a business suit. He stands and walks over to me.
"Jane, you never told me your daughter was so beautiful." Jake states.
I let go of my brothers hands and cross my arms. "Listen here.
Flirt with my mother not me and I don't take complements from anyone. Now that we have that, sit I need to give you ground rules.""Who do you think you are?" Jake says before Dylan pushes him down into the nearest chair. Dylan gives him the death glare.
"I'm the nicest out of her children so I do all the talking while you listen. So rule number 1: don't you hurt her or I'll let the boys on you. 2: if she comes back with kids and you ain't married I will let the boys on you and shot you in the leg. 3: keep her safe." I let one tear fall with that last rule. He nodded and looked at the boys terrified.
"She's the nice one?" He asks fear rose in his throat. I could feel it.
I looked over at the wall that Dylan punch just that morning and the ones since we redecorated. "You see those holes in the walls? Those are from when someone makes me angry. Theirs are on the other wall." He turns slowly to see a bunch of pictures of me and my brothers through the years.
"Where? All I see are pictures?" He asks with a smirk.
"There under them, stupid." Connor states with a lot of hatred.
After ten minutes Momma and Jake had left with all her stuff. It was only me and the boys now. School was starting in a week. My senior year. I sat in by bedroom window I finally got the boys to leave me alone. I just got out of the shower and the boys are helping Nana move into Momma's room. We wanted to have someone here for us and she was the only one who cared enough to stay.
As I sit here, I see many things woodland creatures: birds, deer, and even some rabbits. I can see the stars so clearly from here. Then I heard someone calling my name outside. I look out side to see a boy just standing there beside a moving truck. He wasn't looking at me but I didn't get that sick feeling in my stomach that I get with other people. I felt... safe?
Dylan ran into my room. "We have neighbors!" He yells so all of Campbell and Scott counties can hear him. I'm still looking out my window.
"I see that." I pause before continuing, "He's different. Look at him. Can you feel it?" Dylan looked out the window, and mumbled something I couldn't quite hear.
