By the time the two girls walked into the pizza place, it was already past noon. They slid into a free booth and dropped their shopping bags under the table.
Anya was relieved to see that Nikki was back to her old happy self, the strange uptight attitude long gone.
"So," she smiled. "I have news for you."
"Okay," Nikki looked at her curiously.
"Faith called me when we were back at the shoe store," Anya began. "She said-"
She broke off as a server approached them. "Hello, ladies. What would you like to have on this fine day?"
Anya, caught unprepared, ordered a bunch of random items off the menu, while Nikki asked for a double cheese margherita pizza.
Anya looked at her, biting her lip and fighting the urge to guffaw.
"What?" Nikki protested. "I'm not in the mood for vegetables today. Besides, I'll burn off the calories when I go for my dance lessons."
"So you say," Anya shook her head, smiling.
"I will!"
"You really dance?" Anya asked in surprise. "I thought you were kidding."
"Of course I do! Why would I lie about it?"
"I just can't see you dancing, you know? You look more like the kind of person who would be the lead singer in a rock band."
"I understand," Nikki said, assuming an air of superiority. "Yes, I do sing. But I don't need lessons for that. I'm already good enough."
"Modest much?" Anya chuckled. "Anyway, I don't believe you."
"You want me to prove it?" Nikki challenged, at which Anya only shrugged. "Oh, I'll definitely prove it to you."
She listened intently for a second, then perked up at the song that was blaring through the speakers at the pizza place. After a second, Anya recognized the song too. It was the version of Don't Stop Believing by the Glee cast.
Nikki nodded her head to the music before launching into the lyrics.
Just a small town girl
Livin' in a lonely world
She took the midnight train goin' anywhereJust a city boy
Born and raised in South Detroit
He took the midnight train goin' anywhereAnya stared at her, her mouth agape. She hadn't expected it, but Nikki's voice was brilliant. A smile crept onto her face as Nikki gestured for her to join in.
A singer in a smoky room
The smell of wine and cheap perfume
For a smile they can share the night
It goes on and on and on and onStrangers waiting
Up and down the boulevard
Their shadows searchin' in the nightStreetlight, people
Livin' just to find emotion
Hidin' somewhere in the nightWorkin' hard to get my fill
Everybody wants a thrill
Payin' anythin' to roll the dice
Just one more timeSome will win, some will lose
Some are born to sing the blues
And now the movie never ends
It goes on and on and on and onStrangers waiting
Up and down the boulevard
Their shadows searchin' in the nightStreetlight, people
Livin' just to find emotion
Hidin' somewhere in the night
