Anya often enjoyed watching her friends squabble. She felt greatly entertained when Faith picked random fights with people sheerly because she was bored.
Once, the two of them had gotten detention when Faith got into an argument with a fellow student who said that Twilight was better than Harry Potter. Of course, Anya had done nothing to stop her Potterhead of a best friend- who was sort of scary when anything was said against the book series- so she was punished too.
She wasn't a rebellious student per se, never one to sit in the back of the class or annoy teachers like Faith did. In fact, she usually tried to avoid conflict as much as she could. But sometimes she just couldn't resist giving in to the temptation of enjoying the sight of Faith absolutely destroying her opponent with her sharp tongue.
Today was not one of those times. Dread seeped into her as she watched her two friends face each other defiantly. Before either could say another word, she charged forward and yelled, "Stop it!"
Both girls turned to look at her with identical expressions of surprise.
"Anya," Faith said. "You're back."
"I sure am," she replied with a stiff smile. "What was all that about?"
"What was all what about?" Nikki asked, guilt written all over her face.
"That argument you were just having," Anya gestured vaguely between the two girls.
"Well, you see-" Faith began.
"We were arguing because I don't think you should be going out with Aiden," Nikki interrupted loudly, ignoring Faith, who cringed at the words.
"Why not?" Anya demanded, not without some astonishment.
"Um... he's not good enough for you?" Her friend said it like it was a question.
"How sweet," Anya made a face at her. "Now tell me the real reason."
"You don't miss anything, do you?" Faith asked with an amused smirk and a low whistle.
"No, I don't," Anya replied candidly. "Now, why do you think I shouldn't be with Aiden?"
"You deserve someone better," Nikki said hurriedly.
"Do you have anyone in mind?" Anya quipped with a roll of her eyes.
The other girl hesitated. "Actually, I do."
"Here it comes..." Faith muttered.
"Faith, shut up. What do you mean, Nikki?"
Her friend took a deep breath. "It's-"
"Faith!"
"Faith?" Anya shot her a confused look.
Her bafflement only increased when she saw Nikki wearing an expression identical to hers. "I didn't say that," she explained.
"That's right. I did," the voice that had shouted out Faith's name said.
