Chapter 44

“Well I see you are pregnant again. Which poor guy did you snatch up this time?” she said and Nicolas saw Maya pale as a white sheet.

He instantly placed a protective hand on Maya's waist and brought her body close to her wanting to give her support through his body heat. He did not know who this couple were, but they obviously were trouble. The guy was tall and handsome in a conventional way with his blond hair and blue eyes and the woman was also blond with brown eyes and a quiet thin body that she was obviously trying to flaunt with a dress that reviled too much in Nicolas's opinion. Especially for a ball like the one they were attending. This girl obviously would not know class, even if it bit her in the ass. Maya had not answered them yet and he decided to talk for her.

“Hello I believe we have not met yet. My name is Nicolas Larkson, I am Maya's fiancé. And you are?” He said politely but without any warmth at all. These people were distressing his fairy and he wanted to beat the shit out of them instead of sitting there and making polite conversation.

“We used to work with Maya about a year back. Before she had to quit from her job I mean. We had not heard from her since. We did not expect to see her here tonight.” The blond said full of venom. The guy with her looked uncomfortable but still reluctant to stop his date from talking.

“Why wouldn't Maya be here tonight? She is an executive assistant in a big company in this field. She is responsible for the whole company when the head of the company is on business, in the US and in Europe. She knows everything about the deals made everyday. On what authority do you say that she was not expected here today?” Nicolas said sternly looking at her hostilely. The blond lost the smugness of her face and looked at her date for help. He was looking intently on Maya and when Nicolas looked at her, he found her staring at him, her love and gratitude shining in her eyes. The colour had returned to her cheeks and that made him relax a little bit. He had gotten worried before when he had faced her paleness.

The blond elbowed gracelessly the guy and he stopped looking at Maya. He was apparently expected to say something and after swallowing he turned to Nicolas.

“My name is JD and this is my date Sharon. We used to work with Maya as Sharon said and since we did not have any news of her after she left our company, we did not expect to see her here, that is all. Sharon did not mean it disrespectfully.”

“I snatched her up immediately after she left her previous job. I was aware of her work and I don't let gems like her slip after my fingers. She is the best assistant I have ever had.” Nicolas said and kissed the top of Maya's head tenderly. “Our field is very competitive as I am sure you know and I kept Maya pretty busy. I am certain informing ex acquaintances of her current work is not top of her priorities.”

“So you are her boss?” Sharon asked

“Yes I am.” Nicolas replied not in a friendly voice anymore.

“I see you moved up your stakes. Straight to the boss this time. You see Nicolas Maya here makes it a habit of tying men to her by getting pregnant.” Sharon said smugly looking at Maya. Nicolas was reaching his boiling point fast. He turned and looked at Maya that was paling once again.
