Eight years later...
"ALY! COME DOWN FOR A minute please!" I heard my mom shouting from downstairs.
"Agh, what mom? I have to finish packing!" I shouted back.
"You won't be doing any more packing if you don't come down right now!" She said teasing, but I knew better than making my mom angry a few hours before she let me go on a very much expected get away with my friends.
Okay, not just my friends, my boyfriend was going to be there too. After all, it was his lake house, may as well be there, and may as well share a room with me, you know, just so we save some space.
My mom and I have a very loving and very sharing relationship- as she likes to refer to it- so I don't keep things from her, like at all. We talk all the time, she is my mom, but mostly she is my friend. And the fact that she allowed me to go to a remote house in the middle of the woods, with my boyfriend just proves how cool she is. So, I give in on her empty threat and ran to the kitchen, where I knew she would be waiting."I'm here mom, what did you want to talk about?" I asked.
"Sit." She said and pointed to the chair in front of her.
"So..." I said when I was facing her and waited to hear whatever she -so importantly- had to talk to me about. I studied her face, that was a good perk about having a good relationship with my mom, it was very easy to read her. She had a serious expression, but not a concerned one, it was the kind of face she usually made whenever she was about to give some "life-altering advice" as she always called them, though sometimes those advices were: which color of lipstick I should get that would go perfect with my skin tone. However, other times, they were in fact, life-altering, and they were very useful for me. I've come to think of her as a very wise woman, even though she was only thirty-seven.
"Look, I'm not stupid" She started saying. "I was your age once, I know what is like to be young and in love..."
"Oh mom! You are not that old" I interrupted her, I didn't think of her as old at all, but it was fun to tease her about it.
"That old?" She asked trying to sound offended. I laughed.
"I didn't mean to interrupt you there mom. Looked like you were going for one of your speeches, please, resume." I gestured with my hands for her to continue speaking.
"Ha, ha, you love these speeches and you know it." She said. Yup, she was right. I smiled at her so she would know that I did indeed.
"So, as I was saying, I know what it is to be seventeen with a boyfriend, especially one that looks like yours, and I'm not a fool to think that nothing will happen with you and two while you're all alone in that cabin of his for three days."
"Actually, he calls it a lake house." I corrected her. She looked at me annoyed for interrupting her again. "Oops, sorry mom, I'll shut up now." She nodded.
"I know you to haven't... take it to the next level yet, and I don't know what's going to happen this weekend and you know I'm not one of those moms who will forbade their kids from having sex, and then end up with a pregnant teenage daughter because she wasn't safe." She blurted out.
Oh, my god, that was not what I was nothing like I was expecting. Although we had had the talk when I was like thirteen, we didn't brought the subject up ever again, and I was glad we didn't, so I wasn't sure if I would be able to endure being part of this kind of conversation.
"Mom, I assure you, I'm well aware of the consequences of unprotected sex, and you know I would never risk my future like that." I said very seriously. I really wasn't going to give up my dream of going to college by getting knocked up, I mean those kinds of mistakes can happen, but they cannot happen to me.
