Chapter 1:
In the months that passed leading to her first year at Hogwarts, Avery didn't do much. Today was the first of August, a month until Hogwarts started, and when she decided to go shopping. She put on a pair of black joggers, a red-and-black striped t-shirt and the ring her father left to her.
Once she tied her combat boots, she slipped on her leather jacket and waited on her mom to apparate them to Diagon Alley. While she waited, which wasn't very long, she thought about what her wand would be. Her mother said the rest of the family always had the same wand wood, which was hawthorn, hence their surnames. She wondered if she would continue the tradition, since she didn't have much of a choice. She thought she would, because she didn't really see a difference in herself compared to the pictures of her grandparents and great-grandparents, and the way her mother described them wasn't too different from herself.
She was shaken out of her thoughts by her mother when she called her name. She blinked a couple times, got up and made her way to her mother. Taking Holly's arm in her hand, they apparated to their destination. For some reason, Avery never got dizzy or nauseous from apparation, and her mom said that it meant she was a powerful witch or something. Not like she knew.
They went to Gringotts first, in order to get the money they needed. When they got there, Avery noticed a giant of a man next to a very short, skinny boy with messy black hair and glasses. She thought his hair looked almost exactly like hers, the only difference being the length.
Holly and Avery made their way to a goblin next to the two she observed and Holly pinched her forearm to tell her to posture up. Avery reluctantly squared her shoulders and raised her head. Her permanent scowl was much more prominent right then, the rings under her eyes looking darker than normal because of it.
Holly took out their family vaults' key and said, "We would like access the Hawthorn vault." The goblin took the key and began to lead them to the cart underground. Avery took one last look at the boy, and swore she saw a lightning bolt scar on his forehead. Her eyes widened and she tugged on her mother's sleeve. Her mom looked at her, then to where her finger was not-so-subtly pointing.
Avery whispered, "Mother, I think that might be Harry Potter, I thought I saw a scar on his forehead," Holly looked at the supposed Boy-Who-Lived and her eyes widened.
"He looks so much like his father," she said distractedly, her eyes glazing over slightly as she probably reminisced her times in Hogwarts. She was a year above James Potter, in Slytherin, and never really socialized with anyone, but remembered the Marauders very well, as well as Lily Evans, who she was friends with.
"He looks awfully skinny, like he never eats. I wonder where he lived for 10 years for him to look like that," Avery said to her mother, a hint of worry laced her voice. Her mother smiled sadly at her, but didn't reply.
After they got their money, they made their way around, getting the smaller things first, until they only needed robes, a familiar and a wand. Avery decided to get her robes at Madam Malkin's first, and her mother waited just inside the doorway for her. She walked up to the counter and waited for the lady to come back. While she waited, tapping her fingers against the table and foot against the floor, the bell to the door rang again, and in walked the same boy she saw in Gringotts. She looked over lazily, red eyes searching for whoever disturbed her special ADHD time. She recognized the boy and waved at him, scowl relaxing a bit, which could be considered a smile from Avery. Malkin, the lady who owned the store, finally came back, and saw the two of them waiting, one scowling and fidgeting, the other nervously wringing his fingers and eyes dancing around the shop.
