As soon as the morning light shone through Avery's window, she woke up. She always had a natural talent of waking up early, but she suspected it was just because she hated the light. Avery immediately got up and pulled on a black long-sleeved shirt and black jeans. Then, walking downstairs, she knocked on her mother's door, so she knew Avery was up. Same routine every day.
When she got down, she didn't bother calling their house-elf Gem to get any food, because she wasn't that hungry. She grabbed an apple from the basket on the kitchen counter and sat down at the table. She looked out the window, only to see a screech owl flying towards their window. Avery's eyes widened, and she walked over and opened the window for it to fly in.
"Hello," she said to the owl, even though it couldn't understand her. She just really liked screech owls. Then, she swore the owl ducked its head in a bow. Avery shook her head to clear the confusion and took the letter from the owl. Then it flew away.
Looking down at the letter, she saw it was her Hogwarts letter. She had her birthday yesterday, and was half-expecting the letter, but she guessed it was just late. Opening it, she attempted to unscramble the letters on the page, and after a couple minutes she read the first page with a little difficulty.

As she finished the first page, her mother walked into the room. Now, she never knew her father, and her mother said he was killed in the First Wizarding war, but she never had a picture of him. Holly Opal Hawthorn, her mother, looked a lot like her, with the same crimson-red eyes, her narrow nose and height-ratio. What she didn't have that her mother did, was long, smooth silver-blonde hair, tan skin and freckles. Avery had thick, messy black hair, deathly pale skin, a permanent scowl and a sharper jawline. Her mother says she looks just like her father.
"Hello, mother," Avery mumbled distractedly, without even looking up. She was busy trying to read the supplies list on her letter.
"Hey, Avery! Is that your letter?" Her mother replied. Another thing she didn't have in common with her mother was her optimism. She found it too cheesy.
"Yeah, I read the first page but this tiny cursive is impossible," Avery said, a little louder this time, and handed the letter to her mother. Holly proceeded to read the letter to Avery, and once she was done, called in Gem to get her coffee and toast. Moments later she popped back into the room and set it down, along with a glass of pumpkin juice for Avery. She smiled at Gem, which wasn't very weird, except the fact that she never smiled at anything or anyone else. She just really liked her house-elf.
"Thanks, Gem." Avery said, "Can you throw my apple core away?"
"You's welcome, Gem will!" and she popped away, taking Avery's apple core with her.
"So, mother... what do you think?" Avery said, combing her fingers through her impossibly messy hair. She wasn't exactly a good conversation-starter, even when she was talking to her mom. She really only socialized at the stupid yuletide balls her mother made her go to, which always had all the 'true' pureblood families at them. That's why she hated it, because she didn't like being polite to people she hated or barely knew.
"Well, first, we should reply back. Then if you want to, we can buy everything today, though we can wait a couple months, it's only the 5th." Holly replied. Avery thought a bit, then decided that she didn't want to shop anytime soon.
"Alright, we should go a month before school starts, that way I can procrastinate as much as I want." She said, which was the truth. Holly laughed at her antics and got up, calling Gem to clean up, and wandered towards the bathroom to take a shower. Just before she shut the bathroom door, Holly said,"Well, we're going to Diagon Alley today to pick up some stuff for your belated birthday, so go get ready."
Avery groaned, and got up lazily, and walked back up the stairs to do as her mother said. Avery thought she was being overwhelmed now, but she was about to get into a literal world of trouble.
