Chapter 13 (Jason) Might Change

Courtney had returned home that night with the biggest smile on her face. She couldn't even image a better 'date' than that. Although, she knew that it wasn't a date, just two friends hanging out, just trying to cheer up.

The happiness she had endured that evening with Adin didn't last tell morning. Her mother received a call in the late of night. It wasn't a pleasant call, nor was it even close to being good news. Her father, Jason, had died. He was crushed underneath a vehicle. He was working on it and it had slipped off one of the bricks holding it up in the air. Crushing his face.

"Courtney, I need to tell you something." Her mother said, patting a seat next to her. She had waited until morning to share the news. Not wanting her to have any bad dreams. "You're going to need to sit for this."

"Everything okay?" She asked falling into the seat next to her. Nothing good ever happened when her mother said those words, or that sentence.

"Your dad, Jason, ah, he died last night." She whispered, not being able to say it herself, or wanting to believe it was true.

"What?!" Courtney stood up abruptly, taking a sharp turn around the couch, "He can't be! We have plans, we were going to go to the mall... we were goin-"

"I'm sorry..." Her mother didn't make any eye contact, she stared at the floor, watching her tears hit the floor.

"No..." Courtney mumbled, "NO!"

She ran, she didn't know where she was going but she wasn't going to stop, not yet. She ran past the park, past the school, past the sign that said 'Welcome to Sunset Valley', and finally ending up at the waterfall that hid just past a small wooded area. Everything she had ever known was because of him. Her dad.

She closed her eyes tightly, not wanting to see the light the sun was giving. She wanted the darkness, needed the darkness, for how could something so dreadful happen to a man so amazing?

"How?" She whispered, falling on the ground.

Her real father had never been in her life, ever. Her mother never brought him up or mentioned him, and frankly Courtney couldn't blame her. He'd drink, a lot, all the time. He was the definition of an alcoholic. The smallest thing would anger him and he'd make sure you'd know it did. The last straw that finally made her mother move was when he pulled out a gun on them and threatened to kill them.

It wasn't until Jason that she actually, truly had a father. He was the person she looked up to, and knew no matter what he'd be there for her, protecting her from all evil. He taught her basic life lessons. They weren't always fun but damn, he was her hero.

"And now he's gone!" She yelled, letting her voice be heard from whoever was close by, if any one was.

She could feel herself tearing apart, her whole life falling into tiny pieces of nothingness.

"Who's going to protect me now?" She asked the waterfall, knowing it wouldn't answer, but hoping for a response anyways.

She sighed and rested her face in her hands and cried. She cried until all of her tears were out.

*New Message

She sighed again and checked it. It was from Ruthy asking if she wanted to come over and spend the night. She groaned and looked at the waterfall. It was so elegant. The clear blue water crushing on the rocks at the bottom. The green Moss surrounded the pond the waterfall landed in. The bright greens really contrasted with the wild flowers that grew in the area.

"Even in the darkest of nights their is always a light to brighten your path." She mumbled forcing herself up. She responded to Ruthys text telling her she'd be on her way.

Before taking her leave to ruthys. She took one last look at the waterfall. Taking it all in, the colors, the smell, the feeling of it all.

'I can do this.' She thought to herself, trying to brighten her path from the darkness that absorbed her thoughts.

Reaching Ruthys house took a lot longer than it had taken her to get to the waterfall. Probably had to do with her being in a daze the whole way to the waterfall. However, in a couple hours she made it to Ruthys, not even bothering with knocking on the door. She walked in needing her friend, or someone to give her a huge hug saying this was some sort of cruel joke.

"Courtney!" Ruthy yelled, smiling, than frowning, "what's wrong?"

Courtney looked at her, biting her bottom lip, trying her best not to cry again.

"What is it?" She asked again dragging her to her bedroom.

"My dad..." Courtney started, feeling her eyes fill up again with tears, "He died last night."
