Sometimes I wonder if I'd have stayed in America, would i be such a fly on the wall in school? Would i have prospered in American schooling more than i have in English? I don't know why I'm acting like I really even remember America; we moved here to England when i was 5, so although some of my childhood memories are in a lovely, big house in America, all of my schooling ones are from England. Worst thing of all, I didn't even get the damn accent. What a waste of 5 years of my life.

"Hayley" Mum said, "are you even listening to me?"

"Sorry, must have spaced. What was you saying?" I said, blinking quickly and looking at her.

"I said, your father and i are going out to dinner tonight, so your going to have to get yourself something or cook whatever is in the house"

"Great, leave me with microwave meal from Sainsbury's whilst you both enjoy you £20 steaks" i rolled my eyes.

"Well, we offered for you to come and you said you didn't want to" she deadpanned, "anyways you're always telling me how grown up you are!"

"Yeah I'm 16! I'm basically senile" i joked.

"Oh, how I'd love to be 16 again." She said, kissing my forehead before walking away. "Don't be late to school"

i rolled my eyes, "me? Never" I remarked, but she didn't hear.

I hated school, i was just 'the girl you passed in the hall', i wasn't really known, just by people in my classes. Talk about your typical teenage cliche.

On my way, i met up with my best friend, Anna. I've known Anna since my first breath in this country and she has been my best friend ever since; we literally met at the airport when we were both getting a cab to our houses. Then we happened to start at the same primary school, and boom, a friendship blossomed.

"Hey" Anna said, "you okay? You look a little spaced"

"Yeah I'm good, I'm just tired. I feel really out of it today"

She nodded at my remark as we walked through the school doors and started talking about how she can't wait to leave high school and start fresh at college. I was half listening looking through my bag for my planner when suddenly i was being thrown forward onto my hands, my bag emptying all over the floor.

I looked up to see Anna's surprised face and the mischievous eyes of the person who knocked me down.

"Oh, shit" he said, laughing. "Sorry Hay didn't see you there"

"Surprise surprise" i said starting to pick up my papers.

"No need to be so salty" he said bending down to help me pick up the remainder of my belongings.

"Well, hotshot, you should look where you're going" i said taking my books from his hand and shoving them into my bag. "Come to think of it, you never have been too good at hand eye coordination"

He rolled his eyes, "always with the insults. Anyone would think you don't like me" he winked and started to walk away. Now it was my turn to roll my eyes.

Everyone, meet Lucas. He is the most popular boy in school, which also means he's a complete self centred asshole. He just happens to be the Asshole that I have grown up with.
He seems to get a kick out of humiliating me in front of his jock strap friends. He loves to wind me up at every moment he gets and he would never pass up an opportunity to cause me pain - both physical and emotional. Sadly, I have known Lucas longer than i have known Anna; our mothers have been best friends since their days in college, so he moved here with us. Except, unlike Anna, Lucas and I have never been friends. Okay, so we're not 'not friends' ... he's just a part of my life by force or by fire, i guess.
