Chapter 1

I was “normal,” quote on quote, I was healthy, did well in school, I had some hidden talents, like free-running, lock picking, and some martial arts. Nothing overly special. I had a genius IQ but I didn’t brandish it to the world like Stephen Hawking, no I just sat back and did what was needed. Then the war started. I got fifty bucks that day. I had made bets with my friends that the MEDF would eventually attack us in 2019, I was twelve when I guessed that, I’m fifteen now. They took the East coast and the Mid-west at first. West coast was next, but they couldn’t make it past the Rockies and Appalachian mountains. Canada was all but useless, falling in weeks. We pulled out as they bombed Saskatchewan. Nothing was left but ash and a few skeletons of buildings. We all took it seriously after that, we were doing bombing raid drills everyday. We knew that they had nuked part of Canada to prove that they were serious, no one knew which part though. Artillery fire was common occurrence, even in western Kentucky. You got accustomed to it after a while, only when it landed near by did you take it seriously.

We heard that the MEDF was capturing kids and putting them into a program, something to do with creating a new army of them. None of us thought it was real, till we became a part of it.

School had stopped going, we watched internet podcasts by the teachers. Then the internet got cut. Every military unit and anyone 18 and older was required to help defend. So staying at home was pretty much the average day. Occasionally you would hear heavy artillery fire, sometimes you would feel it in the ground. So when I heard it but didn’t feel it, I didn’t worry. Until the street exploded, then half the house, then I fell unconscious. I remember fading in and out. The last time I woke up there were two men talking. One had a thick east Euro accent, the other had a Middle Eastern accent.

Mid East was talking in a hushed but irritated voice, “I told you not to ever target this area! We had multiple potentials in the near area! Your shelling killed 37 of the 40 potentials, 38 if this one doesn’t survive!

Euro responded nonchalantly, “If he dies, he dies, you still have two others. I never liked the Immortals program. They never worked out. As far as I know you have only had one successful team. And they died real quick, didn’t they?”

I tried getting up. I was still having problems properly seeing, but now I could see the room, and the gun that a soldier had set down next to me. As I reached for it I looked up into a soldiers eyes, he shook his head.

“Do not try. I not want hurt you.” He had a thick South American accent and clearly english was not his first language.

I nodded at him, but when he turned his head I tried to get up. Mid East heard me getting up. “Remarkable. Even through, what I assume is an extreme pain, and a concussion, he keeps fighting. He is a fighter, very resilient. He will be very successful if there isn’t any permanent damage.” Euro motioned and I suddenly felt a hand on my back and the sting of a needle in my thigh. The room swam in front of me and it went fuzzy. The last thing I remember was Mid East saying “He won’t be harmed right?”

Chapter 2

I woke up later in a small bed. There were two other beds, and a two doors in the room. I could see two moving forms in the others. I looked at my clothes. Then I thought, ‘How did I get here, better yet where is here?’ I sat upright my head in my hands, there was a small twinge of a headache in the back of my head. I tried not to focus on it, but it was still there. I tried to empty my mind altogether and it turned into a full migraine. ‘Okay nix the emptying my mind.’

I watched the others breathing. I tried to think back, but all I got was another blow from the migraine. All I could remember was waking up here. But I remember math, english, science, and motor skills. But I don’t know who I am or what I’m doing here.  I suddenly said, “Well isn’t that wunderbar!” ‘I know German?’ I thought to myself. ‘How do I know that?’ I couldn’t remember anything before waking up.
