Chapter 8
Suddenly everything snapped back in focus as multiple Helicopters began to surround us, fending off our transport ship. I heard the coms static out then I heard Dream over the wind. “Activate the pack! It has a special system for drops!”
I nodded and watched her activate hers. I mimicked her and felt the pack flatten out and begin to ... I don’t know how to describe it ... it kind of melted over me and I felt a cold feeling. It was solid metal, but light-weight and flexible. I moved to test it out and felt my wind resistance change as I started to shift in direction. I felt a helmet descend over my head and a mask cover my face. A HUD came up showing, current speed of descent, and a small RADAR system, it also showed that it had small shields and a slight weapons system.
“The coms on here work better and these allow for more control of decent.” I heard Dream say. “We may have to fight our way out of this.”
I nodded pulling out my gun. I activated a mechanism to help slow my decent and started leaning towards one of the choppers. As I reached it I smiled and touched down on the craft’s wind shield. I riddled the cockpit with bullets and jumped backwards off watching it fall into the collapsing building. ‘There are still 6 other choppers’ I noted as Dream took out a second.
I started to move toward a third craft when I heard a mini-gun spin up to my left. Just as it began firing I spun and dove under the chopper. I Pulled out an explosive grenade. I simply puled the pin and dropped it letting it fly upwards from my decent towards the craft. I ducked out from under and turned to watch as the under carriage exploded into a fire ball and the rotors stopped and it plummeted toward the ground.
Dream dropped a couple feet and flew towards another plane using small thrusters on her suit. I checked my own and found similar thrusters usable as a way to slow decent to a manageable speed or to maneuver faster.
I used the thrusters and ended up landing inside the 5th craft. The pilots turned on the auto-pilot function and attacked me. The first pulled a knife and tried to stab me I blocked the blow and hip-tossed him out the open door. The second pulled a pistol and fired. The bullet was stopped by the metal but it still drove me back a foot. He pulled an axe from the wall and attempted to slam it into my skull. I deftly stepped to the right and grabbed the handle. I pulled it out of his hands and swung it around slamming the flat end into the side of his head. The blow forced him out the side of the craft and out into open air. I stepped fore ward and shouted into the com. “Guess who has one of these choppers?” I laughed “Join me you can be a gunner.” I maneuvered the chopper over to Dream who landed on the gunner platform. She quickly spun up the mini-gun and started firing into the other Choppers taking them out one after the other. After the last one fell, we moved to jump to our transport. I could feel the wind rushing by as I jumped again.
That feeling, that bliss of weightlessness, I love it. It ended quickly as Dream and I maneuvered into the open cargo bay in the transport. Our feet touched down inside and the door quickly shut behind us.
“Conch is in the woods needs to be picked up for extract.” Dream shouted to the pilot. He nodded in reply and started heading out.
“You guys want to see the building?” I heard the pilot say.
“Sure.” We replied in unison. The cargo door opened and we watched as the building finally collapsed to the ground.
“Nice, that’s fantastic.” I said nodding towards Dream.
Her helmet dropped back and she shook her hair out and smiled. “Indeed. Just tell your helmet to by selecting the option with your eyes.”
I did as she said and felt it slide back around my head. I walked over and stood at the edge of the cargo doors. I felt the urge to jump, to feel the wind again, feel that rush. My mind trailed off but it was obvious what I was thinking as Dream put her hand on my shoulder.
“Don’t jump. The suits have very limited power sources.” She said to keep me on the ship.
“Yeah sure. Let’s get back to base.” I mumbled as a response.
We picked up Conch 10 minutes later and then rode back to base, some heavy metal music playing over the speakers, I felt my head twinge, I knew the band but couldn’t place it. I didn’t know where I knew the band from either. It was strange I knew that I knew it though.
