Bryce:
'Antsy? What the hell kind of word was that?'
"Yes, Liam, if that's the way you want to put it, then yes, I am getting antsy." It was weeks since he'd seen his sister. Weeks. The longest he'd gone without his family had been days at most, but he'd always had his brothers with him. Liam and Roark were all that remained of their once close unit. He was loathe to admit it, but he missed Duncan too. A whole helluva lot more than he thought he would. The house was too quiet without Genie. And Kenny...
Bryce sighed. A harsh sound between a growl of anger and a huff of frustration. Weeks...And they were no closer to hearing anything valuable. He'd been around the city, questioned everyone he knew, even those he didn't...He'd asked the witches, paid some Vampires to scour the streets at night. Even had the rest of his pack running around nose to ground, and still nothing.
If that damned kid hadn't taken her...If Duncan hadn't sold them out...He felt the familiar burn of anger rush through him and Liam held up his hands.
"Look, you don't have to talk to Dunc if you don't want to. I'll do it. But-we need to know if the others have heard anything. We have to know if McKenna is alright."
He knew his brother was being sensible. But it still rubbed him wrong. He wanted nothing from those Supers. Nothing except a few minutes alone with Creed and a wooden stake.
"I'll check with Seraphine." Bryce folded his arms stubbornly and puffed his chest.
Liam shook his head and stuck his hands in his pocket. "She was here this morning, Bryce. Asking if 'we' heard anything. She's in the dark just like we are."
Bryce furrowed his brows. "She's supposed to know these things. Ain't she the damned Necro in charge around here?"
Liam agreed with a short nod but answered him aloud after a beat. "Whatever that kid did when he vanished, wherever he took her....he's been good at keeping out of the radar. There's not a trace of them even after all we've done, but maybe someone on the other side had better luck..."
There was a loud crash-bang inside the house and Bryce raised a questioning brow at Liam. Liam shrugged uneasily and turned to the door, eyes widening as he hopped out of the way in time for Roark to come hurtling through it, then down the stairs and right at them. Roark rolled to a stop where his brother was standing seconds ago ignoring the dirt settling around his feet.
"That was err-too close for comfort." He dragged his hands through his hair and backed up another step.
Bryce scoffed, crossing his arms on his broad chest. "What did you do?"
"Nothing." Roark grunted, irritated at the accusation, then turned to Liam and whispered loudly, "our sister-in-law is having a hissy fit." His eyes slid to Bryce and then away again, part guilty and part relieved to be outside. "She called me G and then started throwing things around." He wiped the side of his face with his sleeve and turned his back to them silently.
Bryce noticed that Roark hadn't referred to her as Luna. It wasn't uncommon for them to ignore that when they chose to keep her respect and the words sister-in-law were used instead. Luna's did not succumb to weakness, but family did. He unfolded his arms and listened to the quiet sniffles coming from inside and his heart squeezed painfully. Their family dynamics had changed. There was no girly laughter and playful banter to follow up the outburst. His mate was hurting, missing her sisters, lonely even with the three of them around. Maybe he had been too harsh with Dunc and Genie. Maybe...but he was still pissed, and his damned pride wouldn't let him back down from his sentencing of them. He was Alpha around here. He had to make an example of anyone who threatened their pack. And Duncan had done just that when he allowed McKenna to be taken.
