PART ONE
⚀ ⚁ ⚂ ⚃ ⚄ ⚅ ⚀ ⚁ ⚂ ⚃ ⚄ ⚅MUCH TO HER DISMAY, NOTHING WAS DIFFERENT. Of course, after living in Forks, Washington for several years, Adeline Gray knew that nothing would change. She knew that when she returned to Forks High School to begin her junior year her surroundings would be exactly as how she remembered them a few months ago. She knew that when she arrived at school it would be raining, as it had for the past few years on the first day of school. She knew that her usual parking spot would still be available. Most importantly, Adeline Gray knew that her first day of school would follow its usual monotonous pattern.
Nothing important was expected to happen – nothing eye-opening or life-changing. It would be a normal day.
Hailing from a small town in England, the Gray family had relocated to the dark and dismal town following a job offer. Adeline found herself less than excited to leave her familiar surroundings, but was promised scattered shatters that would be reminiscent of her hometown. It seemed as though Forks was worse. So, when Adeline awoke to the light taps of rain against the roof of her house she predicted that the start of the school year would be repetitive in nature.
The Gray girl took her time to arrive at Forks High School. She watched as the new students panicked to find their first class of the day, as the bell sounded throughout the hallway. Of course, this meant that she would have to enter her first period class: French. Pausing before fully entering the classroom, Adeline scanned the numerous empty seats before deciding to sit in the back of the room. Each desk was designed to hold two students, but being that her friends had opted for a different language, she would be alone.
"Is anyone sitting here?" A calm voice stated.
Adeline looked up to find that Jasper Hale was standing before her. "I suppose it will be taken by you."
After a slight nod, Jasper took his place at the seat, watching his silent seatmate focus on anything but him. "I'm Jasper," he introduced. "Hale."
"I know," Adeline whispered, feeling somewhat annoyed that Jasper, someone who she had known for some time, was finally introducing himself. "We've been in the same classes since last year."
Her annoyance quickly subsided. She was now calm — well, mostly.
"Adeline Gray," she said, looking forward. "Would you rather sit next to one of your many admirers?"
"I'll manage with you," Jasper responded, eyeing the girl carefully.
"Much appreciated," Adeline sarcastically smiled. Focusing her attention to the teacher, the Gray girl failed to make eye contact with the boy sitting next to her for several minutes. It was common knowledge that the Cullen family possessed certain admirable traits that attracted quite the audience, but Adeline had tried her hardest to avoid the groups of schoolgirls that awaited for the day of acknowledgment by the Cullens. She saw it as a disappointing endeavor.
From her peripheral it was apparent that the Hale twin was uncomfortable with the silence. Clearing his throat he asked, "You moved from England a few years ago?"
"Conversations in French, please," the teacher announced, focusing on the two new partners.
The two looked at one another and then away. Waiting for a short amount of time to pass, Adeline turned back towards Jasper, disregarding the teacher's statement. "Yes."
