Chapter 2

“Wait. You said Aiden Coles gave you a ride home last night? The Aiden Coles, the sexiest guy in school, gave you, Amelia, my best friend, a ride home last night?”

“Yes, Madison. He gave me a ride home last night. It didn’t mean anything. He just didn’t want to leave me on the side of the road.”

“But wait, if he gave you a ride home last night, how did you get to school today?”

“When I woke up this morning my car was parked in my driveway, tire fixed and everything.”

“Oh my gosh! He so totally likes you! This is the best thing ever. You guys are going to have little babies with thick eyebrows and leather jackets and they’re gonna call me Auntie Maddie and this is so uh-mazing!”

Madison, my best went on and on for what felt like hours. She always got carried away like this, and has been waiting for the day a guy showed some interest in me so that she could plan our wedding.

“Okay, okay, Madison! We have to get to our first hour. You already know how Mr. Howard is. And I don’t know about you, but I am in no mood to sit through detention after school.”

“Okay, class, today we will be starting a new project since we just finished Great Gatsby. I’ll be putting you into groups of four, and you’ll be making a poster over the next two weeks depicting the different characters and what they represent within the book. If none of you have any questions, we can get started. Sara, Jane, Corey, and Lisa, you’ll all be in a group together. Madison, Amelia, Aiden, and Garrett, you’ll be…”

I didn’t hear anything after he called out our names. He just put me in a group with Aiden. I don’t even think I can breathe.

“Ames,” Madison said as we walked to lunch, “do you realize that this is fate? We’re in a group with the two hottest guys at school, we’re all single, and they’re going to have to talk to us for the next two weeks. You and Aiden are going to fall in love.”

“Maddie, it’s not going to happen. He barely even shows up to school. What makes you think he is gonna help us with a stupid poster for English? And Garrett’s just as irresponsible as Aiden he. They’re probably just going to ditch both of us and have us do all the work.”

“But you never know. He might show up just to talk to you.”

“Yeah, yeah. Whatever. Can we just go and get our lunch already?”

Finally, the day’s almost over. Sitting through chemistry, all I could think about is how I want to go home and eat and sleep where no one can bother me. I bolted out of my chair once the bell rang out, but found one of the least likely people leaning up against my locker—Garrett Jacobs, bad boy extraordinaire, Aiden Coles best friend.

AKA my new project partner.

“Hey, it’s Amelia, right?” he asked, not really waiting for an answer. “Well me and Aiden are gonna come over tonight so we can work on this project. Around eight. We’ll see you later.”

As he strode off down the hallway, I felt breathless and confused. I didn’t even think they’d acknowledge that we had work to do, much less plan when we were going to get together for it. And how exactly did they know where my house is?

“So you mean I’m going to be at your house with just you and the two bad boys? Just the four of us working on a poster late at night?”

“Yes. Me, you, Aiden, and Garrett are all going to be at my house within the hour working on this project. This means I’m gonna need to you to be here on time, because if you leave me with them I swear I will hunt you down and kill you, Madison.”

“Okay, okay, Ames! I’ll be on my way in fifteen minutes. I least want to try and make myself look good for Garrett. Only fair that you get Aiden and I get him, right?”

“You’re too funny. Just get over here on time, okay?” I said, hanging up the phone. Even if I didn’t want to look too nice, I still wanted to make sure I looked good. I changed quickly into a pair of leggings and a loose, white tank top; not too dressed up, but just casual enough for the house. I tied my hair up into a messy bun, threw on some mascara, and put on a cute pair of panda socks since I didn’t have time to paint my toenails.

*Ding Dong*

I looked over at my clock. There was no way the guys were this early, so it had to be Madison. I ran to the door and found her standing there, looking gorgeous as usual. Her dark brown hair was chopped into a pixie cut—which she only agreed to after much protesting—highlighting her flawless mocha skin. Not in all the years that I’ve known her have I ever seen and pimple or anything.

“Ames, you look really hot. You really are gonna catch yourself a bad boy tonight.”

“Maddies, I just changed out of my clothes from school. I’m not trying to catch a bad boy tonight. And from the looks of it, you’re gonna be the one to catch someone tonight.” I looked over her short skater skirt and tank top, with knee high socks peeking out of her boots.

“Well, you know. I try. I try.”
