Chapter 4
The weekend had gone by in a blur, and it felt like even though nothing had really changed, nothing was going to be the same either. Jake, the boy who had professed his love for another girl for the past seven months, had broken up with her and was back to being a my best friend. I couldn’t be happier about it, or more ready to tell him I feel. But at the same time, I knew I shouldn’t. Not only was it risky telling him how I felt, he needed more time. Time to heal and get over Cassandra instead of using me as a rebound.
And then on the other hand, there was Aiden who was a mystery all of his own. Every once in a while he acted like a happy-go-teenager, filled with joy and happiness. But he was constantly putting up an emotionless front with cringingly cold eyes. He had his reputation to uphold I guess, but after having spent some time with him I felt like all the rumors were just downright unbelievable. There was no way the guy I was getting to know could stab children or kill his grandparents. It was all just made-up stories to make him seem like this big tough guy.
Morning A—Jake
Seeing Jake’s text sent my heart fluttering and I couldn’t help but feel happy about it. I couldn’t wait to get to school and see him.
“Okay, Ames. All I’m saying is that it’s fate. You finally get Jake.”
“You said that about Aiden just last week. And besides, he asked me to a movie. Not a five-course moonlit dinner.” I could feel another one of Madison’s rants about to start.
“But still, Ames. He broke up with Cassandra for a reason, and maybe the reason was you.”
“So how was the big family dinner last night?” I asked, changing the subject. Her face instantly crumpled.
“It was horrible, Ames,” she whispered. I could see the tears welling up in her eyes. “Awful. They just don’t understand anything.”
“What happened?”
“We were all sitting down at dinner and we were talking and then David and my dad started arguing and it was just awful. Everybody was yelling. It was just so out of control.”
“What was it about this time?”
“Family business again. David just doesn’t want to do it, and I don’t understand why they don’t get it.”
Madison’s family was very influential in our little town. Her mother was surgeon, and her dad ran the only law firm in town. And all her parents wanted out of their son was for him to become a copy clone of her dad. David didn’t want to be lawyer though. He wanted to be a photographer. But their parents just didn’t get it. They wanted him to stop chasing stupid dreams and do something real with his life.
“I’m so scared, Ames. What will they say when they find out about France? They’re practically disowning their only son for wanting to chase his dreams, and I know they won’t have any problems disowning me too for wanting to be an artist,” Madison cried out. She had already been accepted into a French university two weeks ago for her art and she still hadn’t even told her parents that she applied.
