Saturday

"You almost ready?" he asked me.

"Darrell. There is only one word for you: Patience,"

"I've been patient ever since this morning,"

"Well, don't worry. It doesn't start until eight, so we're on good timing,"

"Hm, better be,"

I rolled my eyes at his irritability and continued to put eyeliner under my eyes.

"Since when you start wearing make-up?"

I breathed heavily. "Since my second reading in eighth grade dummy,"

He narrowed his eyes. That second reading was on the same week our loved ones were killed. I know I struck a nerve in him.

"I'm sorry," I mumbled, looking at his reflection.

"Whatever," he got up and left my room.

I stopped everything and followed him. He was sitting on the couch scrolling through the t.v channels.

"Darrell," I sat beside him. "Look at me please."

He sighed as he cut the t.v off. "Wassup?"

"You know what. I know I struck a cord,"

"It didn't strike yours either?"

"It reminds me of it, but that just means I have to move on,"

"It's kind of hard to when its your cousin who practically raised you was killed right in front of you,"

"True," I said, in my head. That was the worst part of all. He witnessed both of them shot and killed in the frontlines.

"Darrell, you think I don't know that? I know it was extremely terrible for you to have to see that,"

"You don't know sh-t," he said, lowly.

"You do know that my Aunt was killed then too? Whenever my parents weren't there for me, she was. Every single time. H-ll she even got me into the one of the few things that gives me happiness!" I said, pointing to my composition on the coffee table. "So yeah, I do know sh-t."

I stared him down really hard. These are times when you have to put this guy back in his place and tell him to calm the h-ll down. If he thinks he's the only one who had to go through sh-t, then he thought wrong.

After a long pause of us two having a stare contest, he finally spoke up. "I know you do, and I'm sorry,"

"So why did you say that sh-t?"

"I was just being an a-shole. It's just that night was one of the best nights I had with him, and you. The fact that two of the people from that night is dead, it only brings back dark memories,"

"Well, maybe good memories will come this time," I scooted over and leaned in. "Just try to be positive, you know? For them. For me?"

He stared at me until his eyes went lower. The funny thing is that I could tell what he was looking at. I didn't mind it one bit.

"Fine,"

I smiled and gave him a hug. When I tried to pull back, he would grip tighter. I didn't mind it one bit either. Here I was trying to talk some sense into this guy and now look at us.

"Okay, you can let go," I giggled.

"Oh, I'm sorry," he said, pulling back. He kept his head lowered, but I could tell when this dude was blushing.
