Daisy rouses me with knifes out, I sit up knowing what she's thinking, "Dais, I killed him, its okay," I speak softly. Without a word Daisy begins to make breakfast. "How many are left?" I ask, I watch Daisy as she counts on her fingers the faces in the sky.
"There are four left" she croaks out and then I realize why.
"Tonight I leave, it's time for us to split up."
"Jo? Stay, I'll go, you need to go home, for Anna and Beth."
"Fine I'll stay. While you make breakfast I'll split our packs." I dump out our packs on the cave floor. Half of the knifes for her, half for me. Ax goes to me, 6's spears go to her. I split the food equally between us as Daisy tells me breakfast is ready. "Dais?"
"Yeah?"
"If its us at the end, don't hold hold back okay?" She looks confused. "Let's make it a good game." She nods knowing one of us needs to die so the other can go home. "Its been a month hasn't it?"
"And a half. Its May 7." I swear under my breath. I missed my sisters' birthday. I run into the open look at what I'm certain is a camera. "Anna, Beth," I start. "I'm so sorry I missed your birthday. I love you SO much" I arrange my hands into a heart, "be strong okay?" I blow a kiss into the camera hoping they see the message. I return into the cave and see Daisy has already eaten. I slowly eat my meager portions. Daisy packs up her stuff and walks out. "Dais?" She looks back, "be careful." She nods and walks out the cave door. 5 minutes pass and I hear a cannon blast. I get up on my way to check, the body will be gone before I get there, I think. I decide to wait until tonight. I sit and think about home and softly cry. The sun slowly sets and the anthem plays, I feel myself tightening up with fright. The face appears and its not Daisy, I softly sigh in relief.
Three left, two if you don't count me. I just want to go home, I don't want anyone to have to die, I just want Anna and Beth to run in my arms, I wish my name wasn't called. I wish I could be eleven forever. "Johanna," I say to myself, "face reality, if you want to go home your friend has to die, you may never see Anna and Beth again, you're name was called, but if you go home you'll be safe." I lay down and try to sleep, I can't get myself to sleep. I think about everything and cry, I soon find myself unconscious.
I rouse myself and see a boy sitting outside the door of the cave with a bow and arrow. I grab the knife that sits at my side and throw it at his heart, a solid hit, the cannon blasts, its almost over, just me and Daisy. I am suddenly enveloped in an overwhelming bittersweetness, I'm almost home, Daisy has to die. I sigh, put my backpack on and trudge off to find Daisy. I hear a grunt and the faint sound of sticks rubbing together, it must be Daisy. I approach her, "Daisy?" She turns around, and picks up a knife. "May the odds be ever in your favor." I feel a sharp pain in the front of my thigh, looking down I see a knife lodged in, the same pain I feel again in my shoulder, then again in my stomach, all three of my attempts to impale her have failed, I just don't think I could bring myself to kill her. I slowly fall to the ground, I hear a soft cry that must've come from me, I must be dead, I hear the cannon announcing my death and a voice proclaiming Daisy as the winner, then I drift off.
