Prologue
Abandoned Infant
A group of Anbu scattered themselves through the forest searching for what had triggered the silent alarms they had placed around the Konoha walls. In the dark chilled night they could find nothing. Ready to turn back the one youngest Anbu from the back of the group stopped, hearing a soft wail.
“I’ll check it out.” He murmured to his captain who nodded for him to proceed.
Making sure to stay concealed in the shadows and to remain silent he edged closer to the sound. The sound came from beneath a large shrub close to the wall of Konaha. Checking to make sure there wasn’t a bomb or anything he moved some of the leaves to reveal a small bundle of dirty fabric. With slow movements he pulled the bundle out for closer inspection, upon bringing out of the dark shadows he was surprised to be greeted by the round pale crying face of an infant.
“Captain…” the Anbu called to his superior clumsily carrying the child in his inexperienced arms.
“What is it?” his captain gruffly responded appearing in front of him with a puff of smoke, his ox shaped mask hid his face from view.
“A child… sir..” he answered shoving the child to his captain’s face.
Beneath his ox mask the captain’s face contorted darkly, “Take it to the Hokage immediately.”
“A-Are you sure?” the younger Anbu asked.
Irritated with him not immediately following his orders. “I’ll take it.” Not giving the younger Anbu time to respond he snatched the bundle from him and poofed to the Hokage’s office.
“Hokage-sama.” The captain kneeled before the older Hokage, Sarutobi, the bundle loosely held in his arms.
“What is it?” the Hokage looked up from his documents, removing the pipe out of his mouth. “Did you check what triggered the alarms outside of the walls?”
“Hai.” The head Anbu responded swiftly.
Earlier someone had triggered one of the many traps that had been set up outside of Konaha’s walls. They took every trigger seriously and always check in case it was to be something serious. The Hokage had sent a group of Anbu to investigate the perimeter of the wall in case there was some enemy in the vicinity.
“And you’re report?” The Hokage asked replacing the pipe in his mouth.
“There was no sign of an enemy and no set bombs or traps other than the few we had originally set up.” He kept his head bowed down, not meeting the Hokage’s eyes.
“That’s good.” Sarutobi nodded, “Gather you’re team an-”
“But..” the head Anbu interjected before the Hokage could dismiss him.
The Hokage raised an eyebrow, interested in what he had to say.
“We found something.” he pondered for a moment on how he should tell the Hokage.
“What was it?” the Hokage asked.
The Anbu stood up and placed the bundle on top of his table. Sarutobi remained silent studying the bundle.
“A blanket.” He mildly responded, looking up at the head Anbu.
“It’s what’s inside the blanket.” Having said that the Anbu pulled the front of the blanket away to reveal the pale face of the now silent child.
“An… infant?” the Hokage paused studying the silent sickly pale child.
“Hai.” He nodded, “What should we do with it?” he bluntly asked.
