The hours passed ever so slowly as Riley lay in her bed, afraid to sleep any more than she had that night. Her room felt as though it were spinning, images of the nightmare swirling along with it.
A knocking rang in her eardrums yet again. She crossed the room, rubbing her eyes and stumbling from her lack of sleep. As she opened the door, Riley was surprised to find a young girl, not older than ten, waiting patiently. The spinning suddenly stopped and Riley stood quietly. When the girl saw Riley's surprise, she quickly spoke in a clear voice.
"Hello, Riley. I'm Emma. It's splendid to officially meet you," she said smiling.
There was a small trace of a British accent in her voice, and Riley could see the intellect in Emma's large, hazel eyes.
"Um, you too."
"I hope to see more of you, Miss Riley. You truly are quite wonderful."
"Thank you, but do I know you from somewhere?"
"Not in the least," Emma responded before turning and running away.
Her strawberry blonde curls had been pulled back, revealing her ears, marked with a single diamond on each earlobe. Emma's presence remained, burned into Riley's brain.
Where had she come from? Did Dragon Scars really take children at such a young age away from their families? Was she learning to fight too? Riley looked down the hall in the direction Emma had run. She caught a glimpse of Emma's red hair falling into her face as she peered back at Riley from around the corner before she quickly disappeared. Riley stood dumbfounded until she recollected herself and returned to her room to get ready for the day.
"This is nothing like home," Riley whispered quietly as she turned and shut the door.
