A long ride

I walk through the streets, my fluttering hair billowing behind me. The sunlight peeking through the crowd warms my bare skin. After leaving the antique store, I stopped at one of the clothing shops with a holographic widow where I proceeded to buy a few things from the bargain bin to help me better blend in with the crowd. Now as I walk through the streets, I don my black boots over new, athletic inclined black leggings, and a cream-colored top, cropped short in the front with a high neck and an open back scooping low. The loose material feels so light, almost nonexistent. It feels heavenly.

I sigh, raking my fingers through my hair, its silky strands slipping through my fingertips. I never realized just how much energy it took to stay alert, glancing over my shoulder constantly. Now that I've been transformed, it's as though a thousand pounds have melted off. Of course, I'm still paranoid. Just because a thousand pounds have melted off doesn't mean that I'm carefree. My transformation is only the tip of the iceberg.

As I walk through town I notice the heads of several men turn my way as I walk past. It's thrilling almost, knowing that I can actually be seen. Even if it's not really me. I hoist my bag higher on my shoulder, matching on through the crowd. I can feel the light cylindrical device shifting around in my cloth bag, its presence comforting.
I spend the day visiting different stores and wandering about aimlessly. I soak in the sights and sunlight until alas it dispersed over the horizon. Finding myself back at the center of town, I notice a small group of men going on about some price of paper plastered on a wall. Curious, I grow closer.

"Did you hear? They're recruiting a new batch of hatchlings for the army." I hear one man say.

"Yeah, I know! But Ma' would murder me if I registered." A second, scratching voice claims.

"Same, but I hear Sadoli is thinking of registering. Leaving in the morning I heard."

"I mean, he might as well. Nothing left do him here anymore. New recruits eh?

"Excuse me," I say firmly, curiosity getting the better of me as I push between the tall youngsters to the front of the pack. I can feel their baffled eyes on me as I read over the sign.

And that's when it hits me. To know thy enemy is to befriend them.

Charsper huh?" I mutter softly.

"Hey doll, you got a pal signing up or something?" A snotty-nosed brat calls out, a cackle erupting from his crooked snarl.

"Nope, I am," I reply affirmatively, turning around on my heel, I face the rather ugly men who were chatting away earlier.

"You. Who's this Sadoli you speak of? Think he'd give a gal a ride?" I say with a smirk, folding my hands over my hips as I address the most nonthreatening of the bunch.

"Y-yeah b-but are you sure? Pretty little thing like you would be better off at h-home." One of them stutters. I can tell he's trying to make a pass at me but he's as smooth as the inside of a geode.

"Yeah baby, why not come with us and play a little while? We promise not to bite" another one with a long, narrow face and oddly angular features smirks as he takes a step closer.
