It's been weeks and Nathan and I have only spoken a handful of times. I miss him, but I don't think I'm ready to face him after what happened at the party. Even though I can count the number of times we talked to each other on one hand, it's like he's popping up everywhere.
For instance, when I go outside to check the mail, Nathan is also outside checking the mail. Every single time I go next door to see Madison, or even Mason, Nathan just so happens to show up over there.
It's quite cute actually. When our eyes would meet, he'd give me this puppy dog stare that makes my heart melt every time.
At about day five of us not talking, I got a voice mail from Nathan. I thought that it was just him apologizing for his mistake like it was every other hour, but this one was different.
Nathan sounded so weak and desperate that I just wanted to march over to his house and love him with all my heart. I can remember exactly what he said.
"Hey Jasmine, i... it's Nathan. Again. Look, I know you don't want to talk to me right now judging by the fact that I can't hear your voice without waiting for the voice mail to pick up, but I really want you to know how sorry I am about the party. I am never like that usually, it's just the mid-summer bash is the only time I get to let loose you know? Every year something like this happens. Just last year when..." he stopped. I could tell something was bothering him, well besides the obvious thing, but that voice in the back of my head told me it was something about last year. I'll have to ask Madison. "Yeah, but anyways, I just want to explain what happened that night." Nathan took a deep breath before beginning. "So I'm sure you remember our little argument when you flipped out and broke a lamp," he chuckled without humor. "Well after that little debacle, I got really shit faced and Amelia kept coming on to me. I knew I was drunk, but not that drunk. I mean I didn't even realize that she had lead me to your room until we had already had sex an... and I.. I erm... came on your sheets. Thankfully you didn't sleep there! The better part of me knew that I had to get out of your room before you came in, but I was way to drunk to actually listen to the voice inside my head. Never did I think you would ignore me to the point that I sit by the window waiting for you to walk outside to check the mail so I could too even though I already did. Yeah I know it sounds creepy, but just bare with me. Times are hard right now." I breathed out a laugh. Thank goodness for his attempt at a joke because I needed the comic relief. "Yeah, so the next day I woke up with a massive hangover and no relocation of what happened the previous night. As I scoped out the room, my blood ran cold when I noticed your bags resting in the corner. I tried to get Amelia out of the room before anything happened, but she kept getting on top of me. I couldn't really fight back because I was still so drunk, but I kept on fighting until ya'll walked in. So that's it really. I know it sounds like I'm blaming everyone for my actions, but I'm not. I just want us to be friends again. I know it sounds like we've been life long friends or something, but I thought we would be great friends. Call me back please." The line went dead.
I didn't call him back. As much as I wanted to call him, I just couldn't. My thumb hovered over the call button for so long that it cramped up. Out of my bedroom window, I could see Nathan standing outside looking up at my house. I was so tempted to run outside and and forgive him. The voice in my head kept nagging me to do just that, but I pushed her to the back of my head.
Day nine was when I ran into Nathan while walking over to see Madison. He walked put his house the same time that I did. Surprise surprise.
The conversation was short and awkward to say the least.
He looked down at me, "Hey Jas. How's it going?" "Fine." "Did you get my voice mail?"
I wanted to play dumb and pretend like I didn't know what he was talking about. Yet, I found myself responding, "Yes."
I walked into the house and went straight to Madison's room.
When I shut the door, she looked up at me from painting her toenails. "Hey Jazzy Bear. What do you think of this color? It's called size matters... cause you know it does."
I giggled at Madison's choice in nail polish. "It's cute. I like the name too."
I sighed while sitting on one of Madison's many plush beanbag chairs.
"What's wrong Jazzy Bear?" she paused for a beat. "Ohh I know.. it's Nathan isn't it. "
"How'd you know?" I asked surprised at her answer.
"Because Nathan is always calling Mason asking about you. I think it's cute. Why don't you forgive him already? I mean he did tell you what happened and like he said, he does crazy shit every single year. It's basically the only time he gets to really let loose. His parents are like really hard on him..." she trailed off.
I needed to change the subject. "Where's Mason?" Mason and I have been getting closer and he actually doesn't suck as much as I thought he did when I first met him.
"Downstairs. With Nathan. You can go down yourself to say hello," she said evenly.
"What? Why aren't you going?"
She gestured to her pink toenails,"Um hello, I'm busy here."
I huffed and walked out of the room.
I entered the game room where I knew the boys would be.
"Hey Mas.. hey Nathan," Mason smiled and beckoned me over to him. Nathan on the other hand snapped his head up at me seemingly surprised that I spoke to him.
I walked over to where Mason sat leisurely on the couch and gave him a hug.
"Hey cupcake! Haven't seen you in a few days. You look nice today," he smirked while looking at my bare legs only covered by my mini sundress.
"You don't look so bad yourself hot stuff," I winked playfully at Mason.
Our bantering session was cut short by Nathan clearing his throat. "Mason, can I talk to you for a second dude?" he asked through gritted teeth.
Mason looked at he knowingly before following Nathan out of the room.
I laughed to myself at Nathan's jealousy.
