3. The Wardrobe

I spend the whole morning explaining stuff to Levi.
From the refrigerator over to the TV and Internet up to the living in a world without Titans and therefore, without a wall that protects the Titans from Levi.

"I keep telling you, oceans exist! And they are awesome!"
"Tch."

...well, he doesn't buy everything, though.

I give up on trying to make him believe me.
Instead, I stand up from the table and walk without a word towards the stairs.
"Where are you going?" Levi asks with his usual expressionles face.
Already at the door, I turn around.
"I'm going upstairs to check on the closet" I answer and open the door to leave the kitchen.

I go upstairs and climb up the ledder to the loft. When I open the hatch, the
sunlight shines warmly at my face trough the window right underneath the roof. The loft is roomy but not overly large. Only a bed, a desk with a chair, two nearly empty bookshelfes and, of course, the closet are in this room.

The dust that I remember that had covered the furniture is gone. Levi probably cleaned the loft too and slept in this bed.

"Cleaning freak" I mumble to myself and pull me up of the ledder, standing up and looking around.

"I take this as a compliment" I hear somebody say behind me and I jump.
I sigh and turn around.

Now, guess who is standing there.

"Don't scare me like that!" I shout at Levi and try to calm my pounding heart.
"It's not my fault that you are that jumpy" he says eyeing me.
"Usually I'm not, but you are scary!"
"I am?"
"Heck yes! Don't sneak around like that!" I didn't even hear him climb at the ladder, which is scary considering how cranky it is.
Levi lifts an eyebrown then passes me and walks towards the wardrobe.
I hestitate a little but follow him behind.

He's so strange...

The wardrobe looks like it would belong to another century. It's made from solid dark brown wood with nice engravings along its doors. But for the first time I notice that there is a crest above the door of the wardrobe, which shows two wings that seem to represent something in particular:
The Wings of Freedom.

I open the wardrobe curiously and see a few scratches on the inside.

"What did you do to this poor wardrobe?" I ask Levi while I run my fingers along a scratch. They aren't that deep but still there.

"I think I scratched it with one of my blades."
"Your blades?!" I look around and notice them leaning against the wall right next to the bed. Also, Levis uniform hangs on the wall on a nail next to his blades. He probably didn't put them in the closet because they might disappear without him.

I have to do something about that blades. I got a wild Kathy living here after all.

I sit down and try to find something in that closet. Something that would explain how Levi got here and why.

"Do you have any idea why you ended up here? I mean, what did you do before you got here?" I ask him.

"I was inspecting an old house when I found a wardrobe that looks like this" he says and points at the wardrobe infront of me.
"Maybe the wardrobe is a kind of a portal? But whenever I opened it nothing happened" I say thinking out loud.
"I already tried to leave this strange place. But when I went in, all that happened was that I still was here" Levi explains crossing his arms.

I chuckle at this. "Already hating this place? My sister didn't even wake up yet."
"Tch. It was dirty all over, how can one live in such a place?"
"Hey! This is basically an unused attic and I didn't really anticipate any cross-dimensional guest popping out of this wardrobe" I complain when another question suddenly crosses my mind.
"Uhm, where did you get the jeans and the shirt you're wearing right now?" The grey button up shirt and the Levi's jeans seem oddly fimiliar to me.
"I borrowed them from you're closet in the living room. Mine are dirty" he says without hestitation. Great. He already went through our stuff. I bet he didn't even hestitate to take strangers cloths as long as they're clean.
"You could have asked before you take something that doesn't belong you!"
"Fine. Next time I wake you up in the middle of the night and ask if I can use the toilet paper."
"Douch" I mumble hoping he wouldn't hear it.
"What?"
I smile in triumph. He didn't hear it!
"Nothing!"

He glares at me for a second then turns to leave.
"You mind if it take a shower?" he asks not looking at me. Clearly that was purely rhetorical.
"Not at all. You can use the bathroom at the end of the floor. It's supposed to be mine but while you're here I can use Kathys."
Levi stops and turns around again.

Puzzeled, I'm about to ask him what's wrong but before I could he asks: "You are serious about letting me stay here?"
"Of course! I can't just throw you out sending you on your merry way if there's that slim chance that what you said is somehow true" I awnser, a little surprised by his question.

"How naïve" he says dryly.

I'm irritated at this sudden statement when he countiues:
"I'm a complete stranger you don't know whether to trust or not. You don't even know if I say the truth or if I'm some kind of psychopath."

Levi stares at me with his steel grey eyes. His face wasn't that expressionless like before. Now it looks really cold. And his eyes spark a little when he's upset.
He probably thinks I'm stupid.

And as far as I understood from the anime so far... he hates stupid people.

Without thinking I stare back and answer: "Everybody deserves a chance. It's right, I know nothing about you. But if that what you say is true, I can't let you, knowing nothing about this world, out there. That... Doesn't feel right. So for now, I'll trust you."

Levi remains silent after this. We don't break eye contact until he turns his head away.
"...So just down the floor?"
"Yes, if you need any fresh cloths again you can get those from the closet in the living room. They are my couisins but you can wear them. I swear they're clean."

As I say that, he leaves without saying anything else.

I really wonder what he's thinking.
