A's POV
As the cab entered our residence block, my heart started to feel heavy. I was so happy when P and I had run away from home, but now, I was back here.
I got down in front of my building and saw that there were two police cars parked outside P's building. I asked the security guard about what was going on. He said that some boy had died last night. He was trying to cross the road in a hurry and a truck ran him over.
My heart just stopped. It felt so unreal. I, who should have died last night, was still alive and this boy, who wouldn't have even thought of dying, had died.
I entered my building and took the elevator. When I got out on my floor, there were so many people there. I had to squeeze my way to my apartment through the crowd. When I reached the front door, to my surprise, there were two cops talking with my mom.
"Mom, what's going on?" I asked.
"A?! Oh my God! Thank God you are okay! I was so worried about you. When I woke up in the morning and went to your room, you weren't there. I have been trying to contact ever since but your phone was switched off. I was literally dying here, worried that something had happened to you."
"Are the cops here because of me?"
"Oh A, I need to tell you something horrible. Come inside, I think you need to sit down for this."
My mom took me inside and made me sit on the sofa. Then, she went to the kitchen and brought me a glass of water. She handed me the glass and sat by my side on the sofa.
"A, I am so sorry that you have to hear this but, P is dead."
"Don't talk nonsense mom."
"A, why would I joke about this? He died last night. He was crossing the road and got hit by a truck. He died on spot."
"That's not possible. You are lying!"
"Sweetheart I know it's hard to believe. He was your best friend. You must be really shocked."
"Mam, we would like to ask you a few questions." said one of the cops.
"Questions?", I said. I was very confused at this moment.
"A, the cops say that you were the last person to talk to P. They would like to know if you have any idea as to where P was going so late at night."
"Mom, I don't know what is going on but this is some mistake. P, is not dead!"
"Oh my poor baby. I totally understand what you are going through. When the cops told me that P was dead, I didn't believe them too. But then, they showed me the pictures of the accident. It took them some time to get convinced me too. It is really very unfortunate. He was so young--"
"I want to see the pictures"
"Oh no A, they are really gruesome. I don't think you should see them."
"MOM I WANT TO SEE THE PICTURES!"
My mom looked at the cop and asked him if he could show me the pictures. The cop nodded and handed me a folder. My fingers started to tremble. Tears had already begun to form in my eyes. I opened the cover of the folder and took out the photos. There was so much blood. P's legs had been dismembered, his skull was crushed and his eyes, looked so lifeless.
I can't believe it. P is dead. But how can it be possible? He was just there with me. The room started to spin. Everything began to fade. My body, slowly lost the strength to stay upright. Everything turned black. No sound. No touch. No P.
