I climbed into my room through the window over my bed. My parents were still asleep. I grabbed my wallet from my side drawer and climbed out of my room through the same window. I took the stairs on my way down. When I reached the ground floor, I made my way to gate number two where P was waiting for me.
I walked with light steps, trying my best to avoid making any noise that could wake up the security guard. P was standing just a few steps away from the gate, pacing back and forth. The second he saw me, he came running towards me and said, "What took you so long?".
"Sorry, it takes longer when you are walking with baby steps. I had to be careful on the way out." I said.
"It's okay. So, are you ready?", P asked.
"You bet I am!", I said, with a huge smile across my face.
We held hands and began to run away from my residence building. The cold wind ran through our hair. Every couple of minutes we would look at each other, laugh at how crazy this was, confirmed between glances that we were sure of what we were doing and just kept running.
After about fifteen minutes we slowed down. This was the first time we had been out on the roads this early in the morning. The weather was lovely, the sky was a beautiful shade of black and orange, the roads were nearly empty but the best thing was that we were next to each other.
"McDonald's or KFC?" asked P.
"KFC! Its been a month since I have had their finger licking good chicken." I said, rolling my tongue over my upper lip.
"Ha ha. Sometimes you behave like a kid. Alright, KFC it is." said P.
We took a left and began to walk towards the 24-hours-open KFC that was a few kilometres away from our residence block. There were two other people in the restaurant. We walked in and made our way to the ordering counter.
"Hello. What can i get you?" asked the KFC employee, Ms. X.
"Yes, we would like a six piece smoky grilled bucket, one Choco Lash and one Chocopeanut Bolt Krushers. Thank you." said P.
"Will that be all?" asked X.
"Yes. Oh and we will be dining here." answered P.
"Alright sir, please wait on the side. Your order will soon be ready." said X.
While P waited for our order to come I went ahead to look for where we could sit. The restaurant was practically empty but I still wanted to find a nice decent spot for us. I took the two-seat table next to the glass wall and sat on the chair to the right of it. As I was looking outside, I saw an old man setting up his food truck. I had often seen him selling fresh sandwiches for breakfast on my way to college, and they smelled amazing. I never got a chance to taste one and now, I couldn't help but feel regretful for never trying them out. I might just never get to taste them.
The old man caught me looking at him. I instantly lowered my eyes. When I looked back a few seconds later, he was still looking at me. He smiled and gave me a small wave. I waved back at him and then he resumed with his work.
"What are you waving at?" asked P, holding a tray with the food that we had ordered.
"Ah nothing. It was just a fly" I said.
"Oh-okay" said P, confused.
In the next ten minutes we had devoured every single bit of the food we had ordered. We placed the empty bucket and glasses in the bin and stepped out of the restaurant.
"Hmm, now what?" asked P.
"You know whenever I used to feel low or needed a moment alone, I would always run off to my secret place." I said.
"Secret place?" asked P.
"Yea. A secret place. Come, let me show it to you. I am sure you will like it." I said, excited.
"Ha ha okay. Take me to your secret place." said P.
