Maya's POV

I got off my shift at 230 and started heading to Claire's school to pick her up. I texted Lucas and told him to meet us back at my work. I figured that would be the most platonic place to do this. I could tell Claire wasn't in a good place with this happening, but it needs to happen. She's exactly like me in this sense. She's the most stubborn child ever. She's literally dragging herself to my car. When she got in the car she didn't say anything to me. It was like I wasn't there.

"How was school?" I asked her to make conversation.

"Fine." She said quietly, but quickly.

"Claire.." I sighed. "You need to get over your stubbornness. Your father is not what you seemed to image in your head. There's things you don't know about that he will explain to you when we get there. You need to get over whatever is going on in your head and face this. I promise you'll be okay, I wouldn't ever put you in a situation that is bad."

"Alright mom." She replied. I just rolled my eyes. She's just going to have to get there on her own without help.

When Claire and I walked in Lucas was already there. He picked a table away from everyone as I thought he would so it would be easier. Claire got in the booth and I followed next to her sitting across from Lucas. When I looked at him he was already smiling at me.

"Hi Lucas." I smiled at him.

"Hi Maya." He paused as he looked at Claire. "Hi to you too Claire, your mother has told me so much about you and I can't wait to get to know you and I'm sorry for not ever being there, I can explain why if you give me the chance to." He said in a hopeful voice to her. It was so nice seeing the way he was interacting with her. It was like his father instincts were already kicking in. This made me happy and it's all I ever wanted for Claire was to have her father in her life even if we're together or not.

"Continue.." she replied in an unsure voice. Lucas is going to see instantly how much she's like me. He's in trouble.

"I can definitely see you take after your mother." He said as he looked at me with a smirk on his face. "Anyways. Back when I was 17 my parents made me move back to Texas where I was originally from before I met your mom I'm seventh grade. I loved your mom very much and i still do. Things go very messy and complicated. I didn't know about you. I didn't know she wrote me letters and sent pictures of you. Things happened after I left. Your mom and I both thought the other stopped talking to the other. So we didn't even have a healthy break up. We had a forced one. I didn't know about you until two days ago when I saw you guys here. It turned out my parents, your grandparents intercepted every single of her letters for the past 11 years. They watched every move I made. Even blocked her on everything social media and that's including her phone number. I know how hard and confusing this must be to you. I want to make it up to you and your mother both. It's a messed up situation, but had I had any idea about you, nothing would have kept me from coming back to help raise you. I don't run away when things get tough. I would never ever hurt your mother intentionally." Lucas explained to her. His explanation to her made me a little emotional when I heard him say that he still loves me. Claire looked up at him after he got done explaining the situation to her and then she looked at me. It was like she was searching for the right words to say.
