Lucas's POV

Maya's been texting me to see how things are going, but I don't want to make it seem like I'm giving her updates every second. So I put my phone down on the counter and walked over to the couch and sat next to her. I could hear Claire sigh as i sat down.

"What are you doing?" She asked me.

"Sitting on the couch, is that a crime?" I retorted.

"..um, I guess not." She responded hesitantly.

"Look Claire I'm trying here. I was being serious when I said I wanted you in my life." I finally told her.

"I don't know what you want me to say." She replied.

"You don't really have to say anything, I would like it a lot if you would give me a chance." I said to her.

"Yeah and what if I do and you just turn around and leave again, I learned how to put my guard up from someone." She said a little quietly. I could tell she was feeling a little uncomfortable.

"Claire, I'm not going to leave. I understand your fears. I would react the same way if I were in your shoes. I know you get your stubbornness from your mother. If I can break through her wall then I'm sure I can convince you that I'm not a bad person and that I very much want you to be in my life." I explained to her.

"Like I said yesterday it's going to take some time. I just can't pretend I didn't go without a father for the first twelve years of my life and I know it wasn't your fault, but that's like reopening an old wound." She seemed to start opening up a little, not much, but I got her talking.

"I understand, we can take it one day at a time." I repelled.

"So before you came to sit down, did my mother put you up to talking to me, I saw you on your phone." She asked.

"No, actually. She's messaged me checking in, but I didn't reply because I want to do this the right way without any guidance from her. If we get to know each other naturally, I think it will be better for us." She seemed surprised by my explanation, which is good.

"She's going to kill you later for not replying to her, you know." She replied and it made me chuckle, which made her laugh too.

"Oh trust me I know, but I can hold my own and I can definitely handle your mother.." I replied. It was so nice seeing her laugh with me. "You know, she had the most ridiculous nicknames for me when we were younger too if I did something she didn't like. Which was 95% of the time."

"Oh yeah? Like what?" She turned and faced me, intrigued in the conversation.

"Huckleberry, ranger Rick, ranger Roy one time, cowboy, heehaw, hopalong, moral compass and Sundance." I listed out all of Maya's nicknames.

"That makes sense. Wow, she really did never stop loving you." She said while looking rather deep in thought.

"What do you mean?" I asked her which brought her out of thought.

"Sundance, she named the Cafe after your nickname." She paused for a minute. "You know I am kinda hungry."

"How's pizza sound to make it simple."  I asked her.
