Carter walks me over to my house. Before I go in, he leans toward me and kisses my cheek. "See you tomorrow," he whispers and with that he turns around. He insists that he walk to school to get his truck because he didn't get to run today.
I see him walk off and then I open my door to go inside. I pass the kitchen and see that my mom is sitting down drinking coffee. Lauren is seated across from her.
Lauren spots me and says, "There she is. Did you finish your project at the library?" She winks at me when my mother turns her gaze in my direction.
"Why didn't you tell me that you were going to the library?" my mother asks.
I'm about to shrug my shoulders when Lauren answers.
"Our teacher said that we weren't allowed to use our phone while working on the project." She rolls her eyes for a dramatic effect. "He said that if we took it out, he would give us an automatic failing grade because he didn't want anyone to cheat. I tried talking to him. But he stuck to his rule." She lies to my mother so easily.
My mother nods her head and Lauren walks over to me. She grabs my hand and pulls me upstairs into my room.
She closes the door then turns to me with a huge smile lighting up her face. "What happened." she asks.
I press my lips together trying to hide a smirk.
"Oh, please, don't go quiet on me now. I need to know what happened. I saw him holding your hand and I just had to leave to give you alone time," she says, flopping on my bed.
"I talked to him," I tell her.
"Okay," she drags out the word, asking for more.
"He said he likes me." I say this aloud which makes me truly believe it.
She nods her head but I can see her smile. "That's obvious," she tells me.
"I told him I like him too," I say, laying on the other side of Lauren.
She looks up at me. "You did?" she asks in astonishment.
I nod my head and she looks back up at the ceiling . I wait a few more minutes.
"He kissed me," I finally tell her.
At that she bolts up from the bed. "What?" she exclaims.
"And I kissed him back," I giggle.
"Oh my gosh, Emma, I'm so happy for you. I can't believe this is happening," she squeals.
Me neither. I think to myself.
"I'll be right back," she tells me. She runs out of my room and out of my house.
I can't stop my smiling. I actually want to go to school tomorrow.
A few minutes later, Lauren walks back into my room holding a large tub of ice cream and two spoons. She holds them both up.
"My mom keeps a few of these in our freezer just in case she starts thinking of my dad." I nod my head to show her that I understand. "I know most people eat ice cream when they're sad, but to me it's always been celebration food," she explains.
I smile, and she sits back down in my bed. We watch movies until we pass out after eating our ice cream.
