MULAN WOKE UP AT THREE IN THE MORNING.

She lit herself a candle and softly stepped onto her porch. She would have to be careful not to wake her family up. Placing her letter on her table, she made her way out of the house.

The frigid cold air brushed against her lightly, making her shiver with fear and anticipation.

"Where are you doing?" Mulan turned around and came face to face with her sister. "Oh-uh I came out for some fresh air." She stammered. Her sister's eyes turned into slits.

"You're taking father's place in the army." It wasn't a question, but an accusation.

"How did you know?" Mulan asked curiously. Her sister sighed. "Of course I would know. I'm your sister for goodness sake! I know you better than anyone. Are you sure you want to do this? You know that if you get found, you'll be executed on the spot."

Mulan bit down on her lip. "What other choice do I have? We can't send father out there again. He'll die." Her sister sighed, before talking again. "Well, since it seems you made up your mind, I shall go pray for the ancestors to protect you." With this, she turned towards the door.

"Oh, and Mulan?" She turned to look at her.

"Don't come back if they find you're a woman. You wouldn't want to soil our family's honour, would you?" She gazed into Mulan's eyes, as if expecting some sort of answer.

"No, I wouldn't dare." She lowered her head and bowed.

"Good." Her sister stepped into the alter, leaving Mulan to herself.

___

Mulan had chosen the black stallion. She was familiar with it, but never tried to give it a name as she feared it would be sold away. The horse was young, strong and sturdy, just what she would need. Her heart pumped erratically in the background, seemingly drowning out her thoughts. She saddled herself on the horse and galloped her way out of the manor. Only when she was well on her way did she realise, that she wouldn't come back.

She would likely die in some sort of bloodthirsty battle or be executed after being revealed in some sort of way.  She wouldn't be the first. She shivered at the thought, but she had already gone over this with herself; she wasn't one to back out.

She stopped at a nearby inn, bundling her army and sword into a basket. It was dingy and damp, but it was all she could afford.

"Good evening my lady, how can I serve you?" The landlord's eyes glinted in the darkness, like a predator stalking their prey through the night. " I would like to spend one night at this inn." Saying this, she dropped a few coins into his hand.  He smiled, his teeth a sickly sweet brown. "Of course. Your room is the one on the right, upstairs." Mulan quickly headed up the stairs, his stares burning holes in her.

It was a small room, with one worn down bed, and a pot. She would need the rest. Tomorrow she would go to the camp on the eastern river. It would be a long day.

As she drifted off to sleep, she asked herself one last question.

BUT WHAT IF I DO COME BACK?
