"WHAT ARE YOU DOING HERE?"

Mulan gasped and nearly jumped back in fright. His eyes filled her with warmth, wrapping around her. His voice was chocolaty smooth, drawing her in. "Are you looking for the camp?" She narrowed her eyes. Was this man of a high descent? If so, messing with him could warrant her death. "Yes...?" His mouth upturned into a smile, and if Mulan didn't know any better, she would have fallen for it. His eyes held twisted tales, ones dark enough to burn her soul. "Unfortunately for you, the camp is on the other side of the river." His eyes found amusement and twitched upwards, for a moment masking the suffering in his face.

"My apologies....?" Mulan made sure to lower her voice, imitating her father and countless other men she knew. She wasn't a good actor, but her acting skills were good enough to work with.

"General Shang. And you?"

Mulan's heart skipped a beat. She had been expecting this of course. After all, no normal person would have lines or war and tragedy carved into their face. But still, it took her by surprise, although by now she had learnt not to show it.

"Of course. How rude of me. My name is..." Hesitating for a moment, she thought of a name. "My name is Hua Zhao Yun." She bowed. "It is my pleasure to make an acquaintance with you, but I must get going, as you previously mentioned, the camp is on the other side of the river." With that, she bowed and hastily left.

Heart hammering, she paused to look back at him. He stared intently at her as if he knew something about her. It was a stare that she couldn't quite place.

Turning around, she nudged her horse across the bridge to the camp. Making sure not to look back at the man.

In front of the camp stood a lanky and tall man, dressed in an important fashion. He gave her a disinterested look as she walked past. "Ahem." He looked at her expectantly with a snakelike impression. "Oh I'm sorry, you are?" Mulan asked. "Foolish rag dump, do you not even care to respect your commander?" He looked sideways and gave her a smirk, and suddenly Mulan felt like she couldn't breathe. Her lungs had collapsed on her.

This look.

It was what she had grown up with.

What she had chased butterflies with, thrown mud pies at and pranked neighbours with.

It was him.

But even best friends don't last forever, do they?

GREED TAKES ALL.
